Publisher's summary

“We have to fight back.” (Al Franken)

The Left is angry - angry at President George W. Bush, the war in Iraq, the “right-wing media,” and more. And as National Review investigative writer Byron York reveals in this stunning, meticulously reported book, liberal activists have harnessed that anger to build the biggest, richest, and best organized political movement in American history.

Indeed, the Left’s failure to oust President Bush in 2004 has obscured the fact that this new movement has transformed American politics. York documents the staggering scope of liberals’ efforts - the record sums of money spent, the “shell game” financial maneuvers, the close coordination between “nonpartisan” groups and the Democratic Party, the revolutionary approaches to fund-raising and reaching out to voters, the pioneering use of movies and websites as campaign tools, and more.

The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy provides a startling behind-the-scenes look at this powerful liberal movement. York brings the listener into secret powwows at Soros’s Hamptons estate, into the Chinese restaurant where MoveOn is born, to a gala event where Al Franken rants about the evils of the right wing, to fund-raisers where liberals openly mock the election laws they’re ignoring, to the movie premiere where Michael Moore is feted by top-ranking Democrats, into the Washington restaurant where Democratic operatives hatch their plan, and to many other spots along the way.

One thing above all becomes clear: Despite their failure to win in 2004, liberals will only keep improving the well-oiled political machine they built.

Critic reviews

"Byron York shines a brilliant light into the very heart of liberal darkness. An essential guide to how the Far Left tried to take power in 2004, and how it hopes to succeed in 2008." (David Frum)

I think the author illustrates the obvious

I think the author illustrates the obvious. There has been a vast left wing conspiracy, the 60s generation "grew up" and has been intent on casting America into a weak socialist state. I really think this book illustrates that there is really only one group of true radicals in the US and that group is solidly leftist and this book highlights that. Conservatives are by definition not radical, and have as the basis of their politics the belief in maintaining personal financial autonomy and long tested traditional beliefs concerning how family and society should be organized. The left on the other hand has been about the fulfilling of the politics of childish selfishness, where any criticism of them or their bad behavior is labeled bigoted and any question or resistance to out of control taxation is considered coldhearted and miserly. I think this author shows how dangerous the left is in this country and they are the true political aggressors who are intent on implementing their views in spite of the people if not by the people.

I Know You Are but What Am I

Haven't heard the audio but did read the book so this is a review of content not production values.

Every indignant complaint Mr. York levels at librals, while often accurate, is simply documenting thier late catch up for what the conservatives have been doing for years, which is why they are in total control. Virtually every major point has a coresponding ongoing, equally reprehensible, activity by conservatives. The question then becomes why bother with this or the soon to arrive FrankenMoorestein "back atcha." book. Yes, both sides are using every trick of marketing and image spin possible to get and keep power without much regard to accuracy or concern for the majority. We get it.

If you already know that you agree with York, or Coulter, or Franken, or Moore buy the books, and then please take the fight to the next room. Start with the PeeWee Herman tribute quote above, and move on to .... whatever. Just keep it away from the adult table please.

For the rest of us that would like to see America return to a more reasonable level of political noise, books like this are not useful. It really is time for moderate Americans to stop supporting this type of sceed whether left of right.

Utter tripe

Lies, lies and more lies from the far right side of the Republican party.
If you want to be lied to than get this book, otherwise look to more impartial authors to get a REAL perspective on the current political state.

Not a Left Bashing Circus

Thought it was going to be another Left Bashing Circus. I was very surprised to find out it was more like a history,
and critique of how the Liberal end of Democrats did. This reads more like a sport team season review. We did THIS, they did THAT. Next
time we should do THIS. Very interesting, and factual. Not at all like an Ann Coulter Book. If you like facts,
and balanced, well laid out, reports, then you will also like Mexifornia as well.

And as for the people who gave this ONE star, they obviously did not read it, and are biasing their review on simple Hate.
The title was actually created by the Leftists themselves. They noted that the Conservatives were organized, and
coordinated their efforts. They wanted to imitate that, and jokingly called themselves "The vast LEFT Wing Conspiracy".

Suprisingly good...

Despite a the title, this is actually a low key, well researched book.

The title, by the way ("The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy") is not the authors opinion, but is the self chosen name by a group of democratic fundraisers. Ie, they think the right has a vast conspiracy, and they want one too.

Well researched, well docuemented, and interesting. Right wingers would probably prefer that this book was never published, since it lays a clear blueprint for the left to get its act together.

An entertaining listen, an object lesson to the left, and a warning to the right.
