Publisher's summary

A poignant and hilarious tour of the last frontier, the ultimate forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Hailed as the bible for a new generation of women, it has been performed in cities all across America and at hundreds of college campuses, and has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement - V-Day - to stop violence against women. Witty and irreverent, compassionate, and wise, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning masterpiece gives voice to real women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who hears it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

"I am so pleased to present this just-recorded audio edition of my play for people to hear in America and around the world," Ensler said. "Often during my travels performing and in discussions about The Vagina Monologues, many people have asked me to make a recording so that they could listen to it again and again. With the online introduction coming just before V-Day 2001, it also means a lot to me that the Audible.com sales of The Vagina Monologues will help support the expanding movement to stop violence against women."

Critic reviews

"Spellbinding, funny, and almost unbearably moving...it is both a work of art and an incisive piece of cultural history, a poem and a polemic, a performance and a balm and a benediction." (Variety)

I guess you have to see it to get it.

I didn't really enjoy this book. I was expecting something more humorous. Parts were very poignant and thought provoking ... but mostly I was bored. I guess it translates better as a stage production.

Staccato Voice

I'm sorry to say that I haven't finished the book. The narrator reads with a staccato voice, which gets irritating after the first introduction. So I started to listen diagonally, but alas, the voice stayed the same. The book never comes in a "flow".

Not a successful audio experience

The narrator's voice was grating. The author confuses vagina with vulva, which I found annoying. I kept wondering why this book was so popular. Perhaps a live show and audience interaction are critical to appreciating this work. It didn't work for me in audio alone.

The Vagina Momolgues (unabridged)

This is one of the worst audiobooks I've ever listened to. I did not finish it which I was the first time after more than 100 previous books. It's just blather.

So this book brings together a bunch of the whining, crying, spazing and not understanding their Vaginas! Big deal. BTW - I am male

Not what I thought it would be.

Not as funny as I thought it would be, but I did enjoy the narration.

Disappointed

I was looking forward to reading this book after so much build about it in the media; so I was surprised about not having had such a positive experience. The story was uneventful and had many places where it seemed as though the author was trying to extend the topic just to create something to fill the space (no pun intended). I'm glad I can mark it finished and move on.

Eh.

The stage production I saw last year was so GOOD! But, as an audiobook, I couldn't even finish it. Her voice gets SO annoying, especially when she tries to do "characters." A different narrator waould make this easier to listen to. All in all, it's a bit disappointing. Next time your local women's group does a production, go see it, but don't bother with this version.

My very firdt audible purchase

I joined Audible late in December 2006 and used the first of my 12 credits to purchase Vagina Monologues. This short book/play includes approvingly a incident of pedophilia, in this case sex between an adult woman with an underage girl. My wife and I had seen the play and one of our adult daughters challenged our telling of the incident in the play. So I purchased the audiobook. Eve Eisler's book/play is an very bad example of third wave feminism. I'm not a prude, but this book ties with several others for the worst book I have ever read or listened to. If some man were to write The Penis Monologues it would likely be as horrible.
