Editorial reviews

Why You Should Download This Audiobook: Richard Dawkins invites you to imagine a world where New York's Twin Towers still stand, where Arabs and Israelis live in peace, where the Crusades—events directly responsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.2 million persons—never happened. In short, he invites you to imagine a world that would have been, and could be, without religion. That is not to say that he wishes to discard religion only because of its historical relationship to violence. This extensive, powerfully argued examination of why we believe, and the imperative of turning from Faith to Reason, has become an international best seller. It could change your life.

Publisher's summary

Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

He critiques God in all his forms, from the sex-obsessed tyrant of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children, buttressing his points with historical and contemporary evidence. In so doing, he makes a compelling case that belief in God is not just irrational, but potentially deadly.

Dawkins has fashioned an impassioned, rigorous rebuttal to religion, to be embraced by anyone who sputters at the inconsistencies and cruelties that riddle the Bible, bristles at the inanity of "intelligent design", or agonizes over fundamentalism in the Middle East or Middle America.

Excellent

Rationality and scientific truth win. The dual presentation with Lalla Ward was very effective and very enjoyable.

Absolutely wonderful

I’ve struggled so long with my thoughts of god feeling as if something was wrong with me for how I felt. But this book literally took word out of my mouth that I’ve been saying for years trying to make people understand why I have the outlooks that I do! I feel like a weights been lifted off my chest knowing I’m not the only one in the world that sees the obvious! Thank you so much for this book

I can see why the local reverend hates it

When I was in High School in 2009 we had a reverend come in to talk to the whole student body, he spoke about how the bible was the best selling book of all time and the God Delusion was only the best selling book of that year. I read this because none of us had read it then and couldn't defend it. I see why he was so scared of it, this is an extremely good book and Richard Dawkins does an excellent job reading it. it is a book that really makes you think and really outlines what Atheism is all about and why it is so important. I think Charles Darwin would be proud of the way that Richard explains it and how it applies to so much in the world

good book, hard to follow narrators

having two different narrators made it difficult sometimes to comprehend if they were quoting material or if it was from the book.

Very helpful in deconstructing religious trauma

I really liked the book in almost every way. I’ve been telling everyone to read it. I am developing a healthy anger towards my upbringing that I can now see I was totally indoctrinated into. Very helpful tool in my journey of deconstructing the way I was raised that did not hold back in criticizing it as it deserves to be criticized.

Comprehensive!

Includes every common argument, and many, many more for why humans hold on to religion, and why we shouldn't.

Interesting Perspective

Richard Dawkins makes an exceptionally strong argument against religion but not God. As mentioned in the final chapter, it is next to impossible for human existence without some form of design.

I thought I knew a lot and was proven wrong

Even after years meddling with atheism, beliefs and religion I was surprised on how much there was still to learn from Prof. Dawkins.

The Antidote to Christofascism

This book will fill the repertoires of the beleaguered atheist being bombarded by the deluge of religious anti-intellectual arguments being bandied about in politics and everyday life.

Moreover, it gives you a proper sense of grandeur and awe at the beauty of the universe around us. competent and clever, Dawkins prepared thoroughly for even the simplest and nauseating counterarguments to logic and reason.
