Editorial reviews

Why You Should Download This Audiobook: Richard Dawkins invites you to imagine a world where New York's Twin Towers still stand, where Arabs and Israelis live in peace, where the Crusades—events directly responsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.2 million persons—never happened. In short, he invites you to imagine a world that would have been, and could be, without religion. That is not to say that he wishes to discard religion only because of its historical relationship to violence. This extensive, powerfully argued examination of why we believe, and the imperative of turning from Faith to Reason, has become an international best seller. It could change your life.

Publisher's summary

Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

He critiques God in all his forms, from the sex-obsessed tyrant of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children, buttressing his points with historical and contemporary evidence. In so doing, he makes a compelling case that belief in God is not just irrational, but potentially deadly.

Dawkins has fashioned an impassioned, rigorous rebuttal to religion, to be embraced by anyone who sputters at the inconsistencies and cruelties that riddle the Bible, bristles at the inanity of "intelligent design", or agonizes over fundamentalism in the Middle East or Middle America.

I love the book, narration was rough to follow though

I love Richard Dawkins, and the way that he thinks. This was an outstanding book that I would recommend to anyone. My only complaint, was that the book was narrated by two different people at the same time. I found that to be a little distracting, if not annoying.

Believers Beware

Now I understand that most who give this book a listen are already questioning their belief I'm a higher power. If so, GOOD FOR YOU! If there is a person of "faith" who is giving it a listen, also GOOD FOR YOU! "Preaching" to the agnostic choir which I imagine most of the listeners of this are, ultimately won't help make this pale blue dot we all live on any better.
But a believer who listens to this and then actually starts questioning the dogmas they've been taught, now that could really help usher in a wonderful new world.
Richard's arguments against there being a God are rock solid. From basing morality on old fictional mythology, to Cargo Cults and their beliefs. This is an engrossing book as it dismantles all of the standard "defenses" of there being a magical, invisible, sky daddy.

Kudos to you Richard.

Well written, well discussed from both sides...

I was already Athiest prior to listening, but this book was a fantastic read. Males want to ask questions of my family to see why they believe so steadfastly in god.

Dare You Listen?

Do you care enough about truth to listen to The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins? I warn you; if you are happy believing the doctrine of your religion, whatever it is, you may want to avoid this book, for it will have one of two highly predictable effects.

One possibility is that you will be stupefied at your former ignorance. The other possibility is that you be horrified. What it is that might horrify you would depend entirely on who you individually are.

I myself am stupefied.

Keeps you engaged

Just a bit dated but classics often are... Fortunately Dawkins has written many books, as have his contemporaries.
