Publisher's Summary

It was the summer of 1940, and World War II had been raging for nearly a year. Buoyed by his successes on the Continent, Hitler was now planning an invasion of England to seal Europe's fate.

Though the United States was still a neutral country, a few Americans decided they couldn't remain on the sidelines. They joined Britain's Royal Air Force to defend the country - with the future of civilization hanging in the balance.

The Few tells the dramatic and unforgettable story of these Americans who defied their own country's neutrality laws and risked their very citizenship to fight side-by-side with England's finest pilots. Flying the lethal and elegant Spitfire, they became "knights of the air" who, with minimal training but plenty of guts, dueled the skilled and fearsome aces of Germany's Luftwaffe.

By October 1940, they had helped England win the greatest air battle in the history of aviation. Some five years later, at war's end, just one of them would be alive. Winston Churchill once said famously of all those who fought in the Battle of Britain, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." These daring Americans were the few among the "few."

Loved It! I was a boy during this period and have read much about the subject of the Battle of Britain and I found this book very informative and it had much that I had not yet learned. I would definitely suggest this for any with an interest in history.

"Best Battle of Britian Book Ever"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it very highly. Mr. Kershaw did an amazing job of "personalizing" these pilots; American, British and German.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

    The personalities of the pilots.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The dialect of the varied nationalities of the participants.

If you could give The Few a new subtitle, what would it be?

    They Died While America Slept

    Any additional comments?

I was disappointed that the book had to end.

A little too much time spent early on bios of the pilots. The rest of the book excels with flying colors.

"Very Interesting Paen to the American Pilots"
What did you love best about The Few?

I loved learning of these pilots who struck out on their own to fly for England, at a time when the US Government prohibited it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There was no favorite character, and each had his own story as to why he was there.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Brick adds personality to the many of the people named in the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's rare to want to listen to a book in one sitting. In fact I've never been inclined, or just haven't come across THAT book.

    Any additional comments?

I recommend this book, especially if you are a pilot (you'll clearly understand some of the performance issues of the various aircraft), if you're interested in WW2 and/or the Battle of Britain, or if you enjoy learning of young adventurous souls who risk their lives for causes in which they believe.

"Not as interesting as I thought"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The beginning and ending parts of the book are very interesting as they delve into the personalities and actions of the subject characters. In between, though, the author seems to lose them and pay more attention to other aspects of WW2. Not that it wasn't interesting. It's just that it had the potential to be much better.

    "Solid history... Not overly engaging"

Perhaps due to recently being spoiled by stellar books such as Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat, I found this to be a little dry. Some good, historical accounts, but I found it considerably less gripping than the aforementioned books. Perhaps my expectations were a bit off. Narrator did a great job with accents, etc.
