Publisher's Summary

It was the summer of 1940, and World War II had been raging for nearly a year. Buoyed by his successes on the Continent, Hitler was now planning an invasion of England to seal Europe's fate.

Though the United States was still a neutral country, a few Americans decided they couldn't remain on the sidelines. They joined Britain's Royal Air Force to defend the country - with the future of civilization hanging in the balance.

The Few tells the dramatic and unforgettable story of these Americans who defied their own country's neutrality laws and risked their very citizenship to fight side-by-side with England's finest pilots. Flying the lethal and elegant Spitfire, they became "knights of the air" who, with minimal training but plenty of guts, dueled the skilled and fearsome aces of Germany's Luftwaffe.

By October 1940, they had helped England win the greatest air battle in the history of aviation. Some five years later, at war's end, just one of them would be alive. Winston Churchill once said famously of all those who fought in the Battle of Britain, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." These daring Americans were the few among the "few."

Loved It! I was a boy during this period and have read much about the subject of the Battle of Britain and I found this book very informative and it had much that I had not yet learned. I would definitely suggest this for any with an interest in history.

"Best Battle of Britian Book Ever"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it very highly. Mr. Kershaw did an amazing job of "personalizing" these pilots; American, British and German.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

    The personalities of the pilots.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The dialect of the varied nationalities of the participants.

If you could give The Few a new subtitle, what would it be?

    They Died While America Slept

    Any additional comments?

I was disappointed that the book had to end.

    "Solid history... Not overly engaging"

Perhaps due to recently being spoiled by stellar books such as Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat, I found this to be a little dry. Some good, historical accounts, but I found it considerably less gripping than the aforementioned books. Perhaps my expectations were a bit off. Narrator did a great job with accents, etc.

"Pretty good listen, but could be better"
Where does The Few rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Middle

Would you be willing to try another book from Alex Kershaw? Why or why not?

I'd read a lot of reviews first. This one missed many important details and while it did have pretty good first-person descriptions, did not do well in weaving them into the whole Battle of Britain.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Come to expect good performance by Brick and this was fine.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I have already read or listened to several other works about the BoB in general, so no real surprises, though it was nice to have the additional post-war details from several actual flyers.

    Any additional comments?

Could have used better "story telling". It focuses primarily on the American flyers, but often you go from battle to battle to battle without real details of what else was happening at the same time.

    "Wow"

I selected "The Few" for my husband who enjoys reading non-fiction. I generally stick to fiction. What a great surprise I got when I began listening. The narration was superb. Scott Brick brought this well researched tale to life.
