Publisher's Summary

Available in audio for the first time since its publication in 1970, and narrated by the author, Germaine Greer.

A worldwide best seller, The Female Eunuch is a landmark book in the history of the women's movement and a ground-breaking feminist tract. Drawing from history, literature, and popular culture - past and present - Germaine Greer's searing examination of women's oppression is both an important social commentary and a passionately argued polemical masterpiece. This is one of the most famous, most widely read books on feminism ever written.

    Story
    "Terribly narrated"
If you could sum up The Female Eunuch in three words, what would they be?

    Important, historical, sometimes outdated

What did you like best about this story?

The depth of research and use of sources.

What didn’t you like about Germaine Greer’s performance?

Terrible - I am not finished yet, but I may not be able to. After having listened to and enjoyed several key works of feminism on Audible, I came to this book. While the content of the book is interesting and much of it still rings true today, I feel that Greer made a mistake in narrating the book herself. I have seen her on tv and she seems both a serious and funny personality, however, her need to exaggerate the pomposity of, for example, Sigmund Freud's claims by hamming up her reading makes you feel like you are listen to a children's book author reading her work. It doesn't work, it isn't funny and makes the author seem immature; let the silliness of someone's ideas come out in the words they use. There is no need to add an extra layer of emphasis to point out this silliness; in fact, I found it rather patronising. At one point, I even thought the narrator was affecting a slightly German/Austrian accent when reading Freud, but that could've been me. Anyway, while I am truly interested in the content of this book, I may decide not to continue listening to this particular version of it, which is a shame.

    "Amazing"

Highly thought-provoking. Saddening ti think how little progress has been made globally on women's rights since the book's publication. This is essential reading for men and women. I found the narration excellent.

    Story
    "A bit dry"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is not a good book to follow Catlin Moran's great book.. A little too historic for me.

    "great book, great narration"

loved it, wished I hadn't waited till my 30s to finally listen to it. Germain is a great narrator, really didn't expect it to be so funny and entertaining!
