Publisher's summary

Uncovering a cold-blooded execution at the hands of a conspiring police force, this engaging account relentlessly pursues the murderers of Black Panther Fred Hampton. Documenting the entire 14-year process of bringing the killers to justice, this chronicle also depicts the 18-month court trial in detail. Revealing Hampton himself in a new light, this examination presents him as a dynamic community leader whose dedication to his people and to the truth inspired the young lawyers of the People's Law Office, solidifying their lifelong commitment to fighting corruption. Contending with FBI stonewalling and unlimited government resources bent on hiding a darker plot, this reconstruction relates an inspiring narrative of upholding morality in one man’s memory.

Terrible narrator for a great story!!!

Trying to make your voice sound like a black man while reading certain phrases that the late great Fred Hampton said I found very disrespectful and corny. His voice is too high pitched and the way he tried to sound like Hampton or any black man for the matter was the worst attempt I’ve ever heard and I couldn’t get through the first chapter. PLEASE do not allow these white corny men to narrate our black leaders of the past storylines ANYMORE PLEASE and Thank you!!! - A black man

Absolutely NOT

I wish I could have listened to this book but the narrator was a NO! By Chapter 2 the narration became an offensive demonstration of Black face.

A Story No One Can Forget

This is the case that broke open the COINTELPRO operation at the FBI and all of J. Edgar Hoover’s dirty tricks.

With the Aaron Swartz tragedy so fresh in our minds, it's worthwhile to re-visit the machinations of institutional persecution and cover-up that comes right from the top.

Fred Hampton is still a household name in the black community and anyone who ever filed a “Freedom of Information Act" request.

I helped organize a national tour of the movie based on Hampton's case in the 1970s... it was seared into my mind. I’m delighted to find Haas's excellent new book on the whole saga.

The story is enthralling— scary, suspenseful, funny— young people hanging onto the edge of their seats by sheer wit and passion. It’s hard to believe they were so young, in their late teens. and taking on the world. Inspiring.

Excellent narration by George Newborn who brings emotion and clarity to the reading.

Narrator is horrible! It’s unfortunate because I really wanted to study this book... just buy the book ! I agree white people reading black focused books does not do justice to the book!

A story that needs to be told, just not done well

Narration also really bothersome* It is such a clear representation of how they continue to get away with murder so easily. Fred Hampton, and every person wrongfully killed by the police deserve to have lived. I struggled a lot with Haas because the story is so important. Especially to have his detailed perspective of the case, and time period. Haas used a lot of words that I felt weren't appropriate for him to write, and some of his writing felt coded with misogyny, racism, etc. He has work to do, as we all do, but overall I'm glad this story is being told.

Long Live Fred Hampton

The last line of this book gave me chills and saddened me. Very well written book, front to back. No conspiracy theory here, Fred was murdered by the FBI. All proven with court documents. Our nation has the bloodiest of hands. Shame on them. Thanks for telling the story Jeffrey Haas.

Utterly captivated from stat to finish

The Assassination of Fred Hampton is a book book that should be bought/taught in homes and schools in Chicago, if not around the United States of America. Even today, the themes and tale of this book resonate so heavily that one might imagine that are stuck in the late 1960's during when Fred was alive and fighting.

ACAB

Heartbreaking, enlightening and inspiring story that (unfortunately) is still relevant and useful today.

Considering this book was written by a white Jewish man, I think George Newbern did a wonderful job narrating.
