Editorial reviews
Narrator Fred Sanders takes listeners on a tour of such infamous historical groups as Yakuza, the Priory of Sion, and the Freemasons in a voice that is sober, clear, and measured. Appropriate, since Secret Societies, by Canadian author John Lawrence Reynolds, is hardly the stuff of tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists. Reynolds takes a researched-based approach to these sensational shadow groups, debunking his share of conspiracy theories along the way. And yet, chapters on The Assassins, the 11th-century Iranian spiritual cousin to al-Qaeda, and Skull and Bones, the Yale-based group that boasts such members as George W. Bush and John Kerry, demonstrate that the histories of even historical groups can be frighteningly relevant. A fascinating trip through time, Secret Societies, is catnip for history buffs.
Publisher's summary
Does a sinister cabal actually control international affairs? Were William Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln secretly involved with a group founded to discover and preserve the principles of alchemy? Has an ancient mystical religion really been reduced to a length of red string that sells for a dollar an inch? Secret societies surround us, yet they often remain a mystery. Their secrecy suggests sacrilege and crime, and their loyalties stand accused of undermining the world's governments. They generate fear, suspicion, and - above all - fascination.
From the parched wadis of the Middle East to the crowded boutiques of Beverly Hills, award-winning author John Lawrence Reynolds peels away centuries of speculation and paranoia and shines a brilliant light on organizations that have been shrouded in secrecy for ages, from the Templars and the Mafia to the Priory of Sion and Skull & Bones. He offers a smart and surprising behind-the-scenes exploration of the tales - confirmed and fabricated - that surround the best-known and often least-understood secret societies.

The Knights Templar existed officially for less than 200 years. Founded to protect pilgrims who were travelling through the Holy Lands, their rise to power was sudden. They became some of the most feared warriors in the region, they had a mandate from God, they controlled perhaps the world's first real banking system, and they waged war against anyone who tried to wrestle Christianity and seize holy grounds from the control of the Catholic Church.

Who changed the sex of God? This groundbreaking book proposes that the rise of alphabetic literacy reconfigured the human brain and brought about profound changes in history, religion, and gender relations. Making remarkable connections across brain function, myth, and anthropology, Dr. Shlain shows why pre-literate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes that venerated the Goddess, images, and feminine values.

Story
This year Christians worldwide will celebrate the 1700th anniversary of Constantine's conversion and victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. No Roman emperor had a greater impact on the modern world than did Constantine. The reason is not simply that he converted to Christianity but that he did so in a way that brought his subjects along after him. Indeed, this major new biography argues that Constantine's conversion is but one feature of a unique administrative style that enabled him to take control of an empire beset by internal rebellions and external threats by Persians and Goths.

Here is the remarkable story of how medieval Arab scholars made dazzling advances in science and philosophy, and of the itinerant Europeans who brought this knowledge back to the West. For centuries following the fall of Rome, Western Europe was a benighted backwater, a world of subsistence farming, minimal literacy, and violent conflict. Meanwhile, Arab culture was thriving, dazzling those Europeans fortunate enough to catch even a glimpse.

Its very name conjures up awe-inspiring images of an age of lofty ideals in which life imitated the fantastic artworks for which it has become famous. But behind the vast explosion of new art and culture lurked a seamy, vicious world of power politics, perversity, and corruption that has more in common with the present day than anyone dares to admit.

In this original and riveting exploration, Susan Jacoby argues that conversion - especially in the free American "religious marketplace" - is too often viewed only within the conventional and simplistic narrative of personal reinvention and divine grace. Instead, the author places conversions within a secular social context that has, at various times, included the force of a unified church and state, desire for upward economic mobility, and interreligious marriage.

Founded in London in 1717 as a way of binding men in fellowship, Freemasonry proved so addictive that within two decades it had spread across the globe. Masonic influence became pervasive. Under George Washington, the Craft became a creed for the new American nation. Masonic networks held the British empire together. Under Napoleon, the Craft became a tool of authoritarianism and then a cover for revolutionary conspiracy. Both the Mormon Church and the Sicilian mafia owe their origins to Freemasonry.

Story
An indispensable guide, Cults, Conspiracies, and Secret Societies connects the dots and sets the record straight on a host of greedy gurus and murderous messiahs, crepuscular cabals, and suspicious coincidences. Some topics are familiar - the Kennedy assassinations, the Bilderberg Group, the Illuminati, the People's Temple and Heaven's Gate - and some surprising, like Oulipo, a select group of intellectuals who created wild formulas for creating literary masterpieces, and the Chauffeurs, an 18th-century society of French home invaders, who set fire to their victims' feet.

Glad I listened, saved me time with my eyes
I saw this book in the library and decided to look it up on audible. I'm glad that I just listened to it for I would have been disappointed if I had took the time to actually read it with my eyes. the author is somewhat in his own opinion as much as everybody is allowed to have their own opinion. all in all it's worth listening to but I'm glad I didn't waste my time reading it. it has some informative aspects here and there. like I said I'm glad I listen to it. I have read other books and I can make up my own assumption throughout things. as much as everybody has the right to as well.

interesting read
Trying to balance superstition, reality and conspiracy theory behind secret societies. A great read to know some historical aspects but use your critical thinking. and filters to discern where reality and conspiracy exists.

Interesting, but disagree with authors conclusion
This is a great brief history of the most notable secret society’s. Enough information to get one starting looking into each group and their full dealings. But the author concludes this book by basically discounting the influence these groups had, even after hearing hours of his own evidence saying otherwise. His bias that these are “just conspiracy’s” shone through clearly.
