The so-called conservatives waging this war are interested only in conserving and increasing their own wealth and power. Under the guise of freeing the market, they have dismantled programs set up to protect the middle class and replaced them with policies that favor only the privileged few. To keep America strong, we must ensure that our public institutions meet people's basic needs for education, health care, and a living wage - before our democracy becomes a "corporatocracy".

"Hartmann's latest is an intelligent critique of the contemporary plight of the middle class." (Publishers Weekly)
I thought this book did a great job at interweaving our history with present day economic and political issues. Be prepared to be angered at our elected leaders after reading this. Its a call to arms, a wake up call. Do not take your freedom and decent living standards for granted.
One of the most important books written today. This is a must listen for people who care how
this world works. Insightful and well structure,
it's an easy listen, with extremely important information about what going on in the world.
This book is the best summary of our economic and political plight that I have seen. In fact, I can't believe that no where have I seen such a clear explanation of recent events. Once we understand what has happened over the last 50 years, the problems are easily solved.
Medicare, minus the "poisen pill" of Medicare D, which made it illegal for the U.S. Government to negotiate for cheaper prices, stands ready to become a single payer medical insurance (with only 2-4% administrative costs as opposed to the up to 35% adminsitrative and lobbying and CEO pay that privitized medical insurance eats up).
Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthy were paid for by a near doubling of the social security payroll deductions. Why didn't I know that? Everyone else but Hartmann tries to say it's a very complicated history. No, it's not complicated, it's simple: we've been conned.
And those are just a few examples of mind-boggling revelations and solutions Hartmann has come up with by simple analysis and clear thinking.
The middle-class and the only possiblity of democracy is being destroyed, deliberately, by monopolists and those who would rather run the world for their benefit without interference from an educated voting populace.
This book is an absolute must read/Listen for both Republicans who still care more about this country than the wealth of oil billionaires and any progressive or democratically oriented, thinking person.
Thom Hartmann has the clearest, most concise voice of common sense in the 20th and 21st centuries. With brilliantly researched facts, a passion for conveying information, an "easy read" writing style and a huge dose of not so common common sense makes this book a must read for anyone who is discouraged and wondering how things went this far in the U. S. Thom Hartmann is the Thomas Paine of our age. He cuts through the political doublespeak and media catch phrases to give us a masterful portrayal of what has happened to the majority of Americans over the last 30 years. Some of our current presidential contenders would do well to read this book and put some of his suggestions into practice.
If you were to go back and read my numerous reviews that run the course of four years, it would be easy to accuse me of being a Ayn Rand Conservative. However, since the BAILOUT by H.W.Bush, I have had a huge change of heart, and I now see the light. I am among the working poor and everyday I feel screwed. However, I should bite my tongue seeing as how I am fortunate enough to actually have a job. There are people out there even more screwed. This book tells us why we are screwed.
The author wrights his book in a way that makes it fun and interesting to learn about the disappearance of our middle class.
The author sounds a little whiny at times, but it's a good book and a good read.
Audiobooks are great tool in dealing with my ADHD. They limit distractions while listening and I don't have to sit still. PS. I can't spell
If you're earning 7 figures a year don't bother reading this book but for everyone else out there this is a must read.
Although Thom Hartmann's book concentrates on the situation in the United States, since Multi-national corporations are just that, the material is applicable in any country that still has a middle class. For all those people out there who believe Unions have out-lived their usefulness, find out why Unions are the middle classes' most important defence. If the situation doesn't change our children may have better odds becoming a rock star or a professional athlete, than achieving a successful business working career
This book will Light A Fire Behind Your Eyes!!! Excellent resource for history of the progressive movement, as well as up to date information on how the movement is still alive and well and more relevant than ever...
Multiple insight building -
This book was published in 2008, where he predicts with startling accuracy the events that would inevitably unfold within weeks to months of publication.... Listening to this book is a must for anyone who values the
I am not a man of many words, nor am i as eloquent as the author or the other members review's, but I just would like to say, "Thank You Thom for this brilliant book". I also wish I could of met your father so I could thank him for raising you the way he did.
Thanks for keeping the candle lit for democracy
