Publisher's summary

Brilliant. Colorful. Visionary. Tenacious. Witty.

Since his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1986, Associate Justice Antonin Scalia has been described as all of these things, and for good reason. He is perhaps the best-known justice on the Supreme Court today and certainly the most controversial. Yet most Americans have probably not read even one of his several hundred Supreme Court opinions.

Collecting the writing of the Supreme Court's most outspoken and controversial justice, the author here presents speeches, rulings, and opinions that reveal Scalia's wit and intelligence, both on the bench and off.

History will not serve him well.

My opinion of Justice Scalia and his integrity were much higher before I listened to this book.

Thank God for a leader like Mr. Scalia

Any additional comments?

It's too bad that a follower of the constitution like Mr. Scalia is so often in the minority on the court's decisions. But our supreme court has been rewriting the constitution through re-interpretation since the very first supreme court, which was selected by George Washington. I recommend "Original Meanings" by Rakove and "The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution" by Gutzman. These two go well with "Scalia Dissents".

interesting subject matter, the reading was odd

What made the experience of listening to Scalia Dissents the most enjoyable?

good material

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

the performance was odd. the reading style seemed to change at intervals without any real relevance to the material. like the reader took a week off here and there, then didn't remember his tone from before. I haven't noticed that in other audible products.

Like him or not, this is a good sample

The author is laudatory of Justice Scalia but not stiflingly so. It is a good sampling of Scalia's work, plenty in his own words. He is not one to be ignored, as at times he seems to exert an almost tidal pull on decisions.

A for effort

This little book is good at outlining some of the social conflicts that have been dealt with by the Supreme Court in the USA. It is of course slightly biased as Justice Scalia understands his own points much better than what he disagrees with. the epilogue paints a quite odd picture of a USA would look like if his opinions had prevailed, imagine a gay couple being legally married in one state and arrested for practicing sodomy if they crossed a State Line. interesting arguments, which I am sure are correct at times and suffering from ideology at times, as he has almost deified a constitution. Always a good idea to let God take on the role of God and admit that creation is always imperfect.

A Tortured Reading

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I will recommend the printed version, but not the audio book because the narration by Mr. Woody distorts the otherwise eloquent text, and renders it incomprehensible.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Justice Scalia, because of the strength of his reasoning and consistency in interpretation of the Constitution.

Would you be willing to try another one of Wyntner Woody’s performances?

No! Emphasis added.

Was Scalia Dissents worth the listening time?

Not as narrated by Wyntner Woody.

Any additional comments?

The narration of this book should be assigned to a less strident reader with a more soothing voice, who pauses in the right places, puts the stress on the right syllables of the words, and reads each sentence with the proper cadence

Interestomg

Not a fan of Scalia but wanted to Check and see what we gad through and seeing what his verdicts looked like. I didn't follow them during the time he was alive. I agreed with some and cringed from others. All in all it was an interesting romp through some of his more moving decisions and the decision of the court.

Disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An entirely different narrator.

Would you ever listen to anything by Antonin Scalia again?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

The narration of this book basically ruined it. It is certainly heavily weighted in Scalia's favor, but that is not unexpected based on the subject. The narration, however, was horrible.
