A Harvard-trained neurosurgeon's minute-by-minute account of his own near-death experience - and what he discovered in the heavenly realm beyond life.
On November 10, 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander was driven into coma by a disease so lethal that only 1 in 10,000,000 survive. Seven days later, he awakened with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm that were more real than this earthly one - memories that included meeting a deceased birth sister he had never known existed.
Dr. Alexander deployed all his knowledge as a scientist to find out whether his mind could have played a trick on him. In its shutdown state, there was no way it could have functioned at all. That left only one conclusion: that we are conscious in spite of our brains - that, in fact, consciousness is at the root of all existence.
The evidence supporting Dr. Alexander's experience transformed him into a believer in God's unconditional love and brought reconciliation to his family - and will upend our ideas about human consciousness and spirituality.

"Dr. Eben Alexander's near-death experience is the most astounding I have heard in more than four decades of studying this phenomenon. In my opinion, Dr Alexander is living proof of an afterlife." (Raymond Moody, MD, PhD, author of Life Beyond Life)
"Eben Alexander brings a unique perspective to the sacred world combining a glorious, personal vision of spiritual consciousness with patient, insightful scientific inquiry. Proof of Heaven is a compelling story of what may lie ahead for all of us in the life beyond this one. We have nothing to fear." (Allan J. Hamilton, MD, FACS, author of The Scalpel and the Soul and Zen Mind, Zen Horse)
"I can highly recommend this important book that has the potential to break many scientific taboos." (Dr. Pim van Lommel, cardiologist, author of Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience)

This book touches your heart in many ways. I laughed but I cried more. The author and reader of this book works VERY WELL. The story gets so difficult for him to tell you can tell he is having a very rough go at writing and reading about meeting his biological parents. He is barely makes it without tears, just at that part, you can hear it In his voice. I had to stop the book and allow my own compassion to be expressed so I could continue listening.
This is one of the best autobiographies about the NDE experience because it is written by a scientist formally a non believer.
I recommend this book with the wholeness of my soul. I will listen to this book over and over. It is that good.
Another book with great appeal is "Does the Soul Survive?" by Rabbi Eli Kaplan Spitz.
You will not regret either purchase.
details of brain functions or maybe it should be put in more layman terms.
no, not really
maybe to get details i missed.... Great to hear experience in authors own voice!
That it was what the author experienced.
bittersweet since i've lost a close loved one. Good to know where they might be.
The perfect coma.
A neurosurgeon presents a convincing case for consciousness in the afterlife.
No, but well written and a good audio performance. I couldn't stop listening.
A brain expert turned guinea pig makes for a fascinating and highly credible witness.
This is a story that is extremly hard to refute.
It was interesting to hear his point of view as a doctor.
Just one more proof of the existance of God and heaven.

I have had an NDE and an out of body experience involving two horses, full brothers. One spooked and swing a 3" pipe (hitching pole" that broke out of the railroad ties holding it. That was one. I experienced peace and love beyond my ability to describe.
The out of body experience occurred approximately six weeks later as I rode a full brother to the horse that whanged me with the pipe. The author retelling his friend's story about his dying mother having a conversation with her mother who had been dead 65 years, brought back an example I witnessed happening to my own mother. My mother was dying. It was maybe 1AM when I walked into the Hospice room. She could not see me because of the light behind my back, but she could see her friends. Friends waiting for her to cross over to their side. I knew what was going on as she scanned the far wall of her room. Every few seconds she would stop, look and a magnificent smile would cross light her face. Accessing the benevolent powers of the universe is indeed possible. One small sentence I have read hundreds of times, "That we (Psychiatrists) are not well equipped to apply the powers of good that lie outside our synthetic knowledge". (Alcoholics Anonymous pg xxvii).I have applies my synthetic knowledge to access these powers, as God would have me do.Off to Amazon and Hemi Sync..

I don't know that I would have had the same reactions to the book if I read it. The author narrates the book, and there is magic in the narration. Because he is telling his own story, in his own words, the story becomes so real,so believable, and so poignant. After listening to audiobook, you KNOW this happened.
This isn't a bad book, it just didn't prove to me that heaven really exists. I thought it was just another story about a near-death experience, but as I already said, I think I was expecting too much. I was hoping to have my faith restored and this isn't the book to do it.
I will listen to this again just to re-capture the feeling the author explained about his experience.
I liked it when he could explain away the other surgeon's reasons for what happened to him.
I liked his description of going in and out of different levels of heaven.
Gave me goose bumps and of course cried at different parts.
Was nice that it was read by the author for effect, but thought there could have been a little more emotion in the reading.
Another in the list of there really IS something beyond death...noteworthy because of the author's education and experience in dealing with the transition from life to after-life.
Believers will be comforted, non-believers will seek to discredit the author's account and/or experience and conclusions. A gentle listen on a fascinating subject.
