Losing America: Confronting a Reckless and Arrogant Presidency | [Robert C. Byrd]

Losing America: Confronting a Reckless and Arrogant Presidency

In the months and years following September 11, Robert C. Byrd has viewed with alarm what he considers to be a "slow unraveling of the people's liberties", when all dissenting voices were stilled and awesome power swung suddenly to the president to fight a "war on terror". This path violates historical American principles, it shows no regard for the balance of power or the role of the Congress; it invades our privacy; and it eliminates public participation in and understanding of government.

This path violates historical American principles, it shows no regard for the balance of power or the role of the Congress; it invades our privacy; and it eliminates public participation in and understanding of government. Swept along, we have entered a war without proper consideration and rushed dangerous legislation through Congress. Now is the time to regain the Constitution, to return to the values and processes that made America great. Byrd does not shrink from speaking the truth to an ever aggressive and imperial White House.

What the Critics Say

"Attacks on the Bush presidency have proliferated in recent months, but few critics bring to the argument the weight of Senator Byrd (D-W.Va.), who has served under 11 presidents. Few combine his scholar's understanding of constitutional government with the experience gained in his nearly half-century of Senate tenure." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Learning History"

While virulently anti-Bush, and tainted with his own legacy of pork spending, Byrd does a great job of walking you through recent history from a Senatorial perspective. At the same time he brings to the forefront lessons forgotten from our civics classes, how the Legislative and Executive branches of government were intended to work, and how we are losing that through our own neglect, vote pandering of candidates, special interests, and power grabbing at the executive level that is not just laid at the feet of Bush 43. The only reason this is not a 5 star book is Byrd's sometimes hyperbolic attacks on GWB.

"Congress now a rubber stamp for the President?"

Concern for following the constitution is front and center in this fine work. He identifies in great detail where the Bush Administration has fallen far short of the spirit and letter of our founding document. The kickers include the administrations making a rubber stamp of congress by enforcing limiting of debate on many items including military appropriations and of course the granting of the power to invade Iraq without much debate. He has caught a sinister aspect of the Bush Administration here.
One of the few problems with the text is repetition of facts and stories that are important but made me wonder if I had lost track and gone backward in the recording.

    "An Important Perspective"

Those who actually watch or listen to CSPAN have discovered over the past few years, that Senator Robert Byrd is one of the few legislators who speaks and acts from a scholar's love of history -- particularly American history, the founding fathers and (with great fondness) the Constitution. His perspectives on recent times are framed and informed by this knowledge. His style sometimes hot with a Patriot's zeal.

In contrast with all the name-calling (see the other "review" of this book) that passes for argument and discussion, Byrd's eye-witness view of modern events, his participation, and his perspective from years of devout study of the Constitution (he carries with him at all times), makes this book an important addition for anyone who appreciates how serious and pivotal these first few years of the 21th Century are for America and the world.

Oh... and if you are the least familiar with the Senetor, there is no question that this is not a "ghost-written" book. It is as firey as any speech he has given on the floor, full of his unique expressions and insight... and Senetor Byrd is one representative who would never have the gall to put his name on someone else's words -- as if anyone else could capture his grace and gumption!

It's great to see a book about politics and government that's not some cheap platform for a reach towards a higher office, or a desperate political comeback. (We all know who's writing those books, don't we!) But it would be nice if the production values were as lofty as the content. Leaving in the reader's bad takes as well as his second, better deliveries, is a sloppy way to present this material. But hey, real democracy can sometimes sound as messy as it is to deliberate!

"Robert Byrd tells it like it is."

In these tenuous times when our democracy is under assault from all sides, it is sobering, but necessary that Senator Byrd, one of the living experts on our Constitution, should tell the truth about the state of the Union. Beautifully written, and well read.

    "Losing America (Unabridged)"

Losing America by Senator Robert Byrd, is a moving and wonderful example of someone who understands the reality of the US Constitution, the rule of law, and the separation of powers. As an Independent, I don't always find myself in agreement. In fact I disagree with the distinguished Sentor on many occations, but on this very important topic, he is right on the money. Since most citizens have never read the Constitution, let alone know what it means, it has become very easy for the "elite" of the country to unlock the chains that was placed on the Federal Government and are now on the people of this country. If our founding fathers could see what has happened, how the last 3 Presidents have disregarded the law especially the current resident, they would recoil in horror. It does not matter where truth may be found or who even may speak it, but when truth does rise to the top it is like a cold glass of water to a thirsty man. This wonderful audio book tells the truth. Bravo Mr. Byrd.

"the truth may be hard to swallow"

Very clear, concise and well documented book. The credibility of Mr. Byrd is what makes this particular expose compelling. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen, no matter who you voted for!

    "Obviously ghosted"

Why did I listen to this? What a waste of time. Obviously ghosted, and not very well. Byrd should fly south with the rest of the cukoos.
I just have a hard time believing anthing from this reformed Ku Klux Klanner Grand Kleagle.
