A mind expanding journey through black America

Though this book is quite dated (most of the stories taking place in the mid 1990's), the range of different characters and perspectives is mind expanding. The author travels to historically black towns and spends time with some fascinating characters from the black middle, upper and working class. From the art collecting doctors in Detroit to the bounty hunter from New Jersey to the rodeo promoter from Chicago, the author gets a wide range of perspectives on being black in America. It's a cast of human beings that defy catagories and stereotypes and are sure to expand your outlook on race relations and racial politics in America.

Perspectives

Overall this was a good book. As a black man in his 20s, I really enjoyed hearing so many different perspectives as toward how people are with their blackness.

An amazing listen

Listening to this story, you’d think the author was speaking of 2023.

This book was more than just sociological gold mine; it also drudged memories of my time in Black America. As a black man living in America, I came across every single black person mentioned in this book and more. This book literally spoke to my mind, body, soul, and experience. And the narration was on point! I love how the narrator changed his tone to try and match some of the character voices, rather than reading blandly. Beautiful!
