Editorial reviews

Dorah Williams’ real-life ghost story begins like so many others: A young family moves into a historic mansion, its untold history and baroque trappings portending supernatural secrets. Nevertheless, this is no fiction, nor is it cliché: The Williams matriarch’s memoirs aren’t so much terrifying as bewildering, vaguely eerie. At times Williams’ ghosts are playful, almost childlike, and they don’t necessarily forebode a horrific ending for the house’s inhabitants. An uncanny experience nonetheless, Haunted receives a suitably spooky send-up from established documentarian Katina Kalin, who captures the warmth, wonderment, and worry of this vigilant mother. Kalin cuts through whatever incredulity might belie Haunted, and lends authenticity - even a sense of familiarity - to the Williams family’s plight, so that listeners will empathize with their paranormal predicament.

Publisher's summary

It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams' new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

Wonderful account of a haunting!

Wonderfully told story of a haunting. It made me feel compassion towards these benign spirits. It also clarified that a haunting could be occurring to help us understand a spirits sadness or feelings.

Not bad, if that's what you are looking for.

I like true ghost stories, and this one works. However, the performer tries to do different voices and it comes off as grating and false. As a narrator, she was fine. So is the story, but, like. there is no peril, no fear for the protagonists, and that makes for a straightforward curio piece.

Good listen

This is a good story and worth the time. Not a scary story if that’s what you’re after though.

Quick read interesting

Where does Haunted rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Narrator is excellent. I don't know how a family could live in what is obviously a Portal for lost spirits. Very interesting.

A Family's Journey

What made the experience of listening to Haunted the most enjoyable?

This book caught my attention because it seemed to be the story of a family similar to mine and I wanted to read about how another family dealt with the paranormal. I loved the close attention to detail which helps to paint a picture for listeners. I felt encouraged by the strength of the author as she faced real phenomenon and yet found ways to continue to live her life and to protect her family. Her empathy and ability to see issues from other people's perspective served her well in the telling of her story. I enjoyed the narrator and found her voice and emotion contributed to the way the story was told and how I was able to picture the family and their home so clearly.

Have you listened to any of Katina Kalin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard this narrator before.

Any additional comments?

The research that the author does yields some astounding facts. Many folks who experience the paranormal are unable to find details about the history of their homes or the land upon which the home sits. The extensive history available to the author makes this story complete and I believe helped her to stay focused on finding a resolution the haunting her family experienced.

Enjoyable, but not great

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, it is entertaining, but not great.

If you’ve listened to books by Dorah L. Williams before, how does this one compare?

No

What three words best describe Katina Kalin’s voice?

Pleasant when natural, but grating when doing other voices. The children's voices are irritating.

Do you think Haunted needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. The story is done.

Any additional comments?

The story was pleasant, a good story. However, I would like the writing style to be less motherly. Hug this, kiss that, gets old. It kind of came across as personal, family business of which I was not a part. Ms.Kalin's voice was pleasant, enjoyable even, when she was speaking as she would normally, but she missed pretty badly when going for male voices. The voices she did for the kids was just painful, and hard to listen to.

A Friendly Haunting

Any additional comments?

Not really a Haunting but more of a weird things happen but nothing scary or harmful. Family lives in house for many years and occasionally weird stuff happens. The Ghosts are friendly children who basically leave them alone unless they get bored. Which is exactly what I felt at times "bored". Also the narration is awful because it frequently cuts out to a different woman doing edits.

Not the worst story but kind of boring and pointless. Nothing really happened to this family I don't know why they even wrote a book about this mundane haunting.
