Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Astute critic and biographer Christopher Hitchens comes out swinging in this—dare I say it—enjoyable discussion of religions worldwide. Believers and nonbelievers alike will find value in listening to this provocative book that comes at a time when people the world over are reeling from news of terrorist acts inspired by religious fundamentalism. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have trod this road in recent years, but it is Hitchens who achieves the most memorable exploration. – Corey Thrasher

Publisher's summary

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty of the double helix.

"Effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational." (Booklist)

Mumbling Speed Reading

I found this one very frustrating. Hitchens is tough to listen to. He mumbles, read too fast, and trails off at the end of each sentence into his deep British accent. I missed most of it. Better as a read I'm sure.

Hitchens was a rare bird,

lots of data I slowed the play back to 80 percent. very knowledgeable. comes off offensive but you can't deny the very many contradictions in religion

Bad Reading!!

Whoever it was at Audible that let Hitchens mumble his way through his own book, don't do that again. I have listened to some books read by the author and they were great! This Reading was unintelligible. I finally have up! I've read and enjoyed Hitchens in the past, I'm glad I wasn't one of his students.

Well researched, well written, and the case is thoroughly presented. I enjoyed this book and the narration, was perfect, his cadence and narrative points of emphasis are classic Hitchens.

Amen! Religion promotes ignorance and hate!

The way Mr Hitchens read this book was not easy to hear, however, the message is a work of art in itself. if reading this book makes you upset then it only proves his point that religion is harmful. Religion promotes hatred since they all believe that they are the "right" one. Religion needs to go; open your mind and think.

Swift the myths illuminated

The narration sometimes was a little too quick for me, but the beauty is I could review with the touch of a button.
The content, the laying bare factual history, hypocrisy, power and greed are all in this tome.
For me the fiercest caution is federally funded centers of education teaching bronze age topics in the 21st century, crippling us all as a nation and taxpayers obliged to pick up the tab.

Great collection of arguments and points

This very much feels like a review of many old videos and debates featuring Christopher Hitchens so if you've been watching that kind of thing it's basically that pooled into one place.
