Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Astute critic and biographer Christopher Hitchens comes out swinging in this—dare I say it—enjoyable discussion of religions worldwide. Believers and nonbelievers alike will find value in listening to this provocative book that comes at a time when people the world over are reeling from news of terrorist acts inspired by religious fundamentalism. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have trod this road in recent years, but it is Hitchens who achieves the most memorable exploration. – Corey Thrasher

Publisher's summary

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty of the double helix.

Critic reviews

"The best of the recent rash of atheist manifestos." (Publishers Weekly)
"Effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational." (Booklist)

I'm recommending this!

I've always been a skeptic I think, only in recent years admitting to my atheism in public. However, I never had the opportunity to hear or hear of Christopher Hitchens. A lot of the arguments and conclusions he'd presented I had already heard of, looked into, or came upon by myself. That process took me years to complete. A book that compiles the failings of religion like this would have been incredibly useful when I'd first started questioning. Perhaps now, I can save someone else some time!

Good Introduction for The Skeptical

If you're new to religious skepticism, this is a good beginning read. However, if you are well-read on the subject, the book can feel too familiar at points with the only major freshness being Hitchens' personal anecdotes.

A good overview of religion

but the author's voice put me to sleep a few times. I would recommend the printed edition.

amazing

Well read, Hitchens voice echos his message during life with clarity and elegance. He admonishes the listener to not take a passive stance in what has been deemed the politically correct posture; but to engage and beat back the fear driven mideval drivel that is permeating our modern world and stunting its progress.

Too fast

What did you love best about God Is Not Great?

The content was great. Illuminating!

What other book might you compare God Is Not Great to and why?

The God delusion- Richard Dawkins
The end of faith -Sam Harris
Why I am not a Christian- Bertrand Russells

Would you listen to another book narrated by Christopher Hitchens?

Yes, but won't be a big fan because he reads very fast for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO! You really have to ponder and think about the message!

Any additional comments?

I really liked Hitchens approach and message. Do your own thing if you'd like but leave other adults alone and definitely kids!!!

This is without a doubt a 5 star book.

Well written and well read. I really do love that the author himself narrated the book. Christopher Hitchens did a masterful job and I do not believe anyone else could have done it as much justice. Clear and concise. Highly recommended.

A much needed criticism of religion

Hitchins brings a much needed and well researched criticism of religion. There has been too many excuses given to religion and the author present the religions for what they are without turning the work into a hit piece.
