Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Astute critic and biographer Christopher Hitchens comes out swinging in this—dare I say it—enjoyable discussion of religions worldwide. Believers and nonbelievers alike will find value in listening to this provocative book that comes at a time when people the world over are reeling from news of terrorist acts inspired by religious fundamentalism. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have trod this road in recent years, but it is Hitchens who achieves the most memorable exploration. – Corey Thrasher

Publisher's summary

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty of the double helix.

"The best of the recent rash of atheist manifestos." (Publishers Weekly)
"Effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational." (Booklist)

Why are we so crazy about religion?

Any additional comments?

This book is not an atheistic tirade. Christopher Hitchens gives us a thorough and sincere critique of our passion for religion.

"Know thyself"

An erudite and moving appraisal of religion and our need to liberate ourselves from the shackles it places on our intellect, sexuality, and morals. Christopher Hitchens is the voice of reason and his reading of his words lend the weight of his toils against the "great evil" that he has fought against in his countless public debates. This book will take its place among my favorites and I will always remember the author as the Socrates of my age.

Argumentative and interesting

Comparing secularism against the concepts of deities and beliefs is not easy as both stem from ideas.

Science can disprove some phenomena, but none have access to the meta, supra and alpha.

Recommended for the ones willing to challenge their thoughts and excel in knowledge.

One of my favorite humans on this planet

Hitch is so inspiring. He truly brings to light the truths behind religions and spells out the fallacies we all already know but never really understood. This book is a must read.

I'm recommending this!

I've always been a skeptic I think, only in recent years admitting to my atheism in public. However, I never had the opportunity to hear or hear of Christopher Hitchens. A lot of the arguments and conclusions he'd presented I had already heard of, looked into, or came upon by myself. That process took me years to complete. A book that compiles the failings of religion like this would have been incredibly useful when I'd first started questioning. Perhaps now, I can save someone else some time!

Good Introduction for The Skeptical

If you're new to religious skepticism, this is a good beginning read. However, if you are well-read on the subject, the book can feel too familiar at points with the only major freshness being Hitchens' personal anecdotes.
