Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Astute critic and biographer Christopher Hitchens comes out swinging in this—dare I say it—enjoyable discussion of religions worldwide. Believers and nonbelievers alike will find value in listening to this provocative book that comes at a time when people the world over are reeling from news of terrorist acts inspired by religious fundamentalism. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have trod this road in recent years, but it is Hitchens who achieves the most memorable exploration. – Corey Thrasher

Publisher's summary

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty of the double helix.

"The best of the recent rash of atheist manifestos." (Publishers Weekly)
"Effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational." (Booklist)

Hitchens in full bloom

I miss Christopher Hitchens. Sometimes I get on YouTube just to find some clips where some poor fool is getting Hitch-slapped. If you don't know Hitchens then I can't help you and if you do there is little more to be added. I don't always agree but I always, ALWAYS, feel like he has an argument and my rejoinder has to be pretty good. When he gets a little too emotional (e.g. the word "circumcision" sets him off) you can see some cracks in his reasoning. But most of the time he is spot on.

You need to hear this!

I don't care if you're religious, non-religious, hate religion, or love religion, you NEED to listen to this book!
Christopher Hitchens' assessment of religion in modern culture is astute, authoritative, insightful, and frightening.
Don't abrogate your human right to freedom of thought—instead, take a realistic look at the world around you, and especially at the sickness of religion-based prejudice, cruelty, and ignorance that has characterized ALL religion through all of history—and persists to the present day.
If you think God is real, this book will make you less tolerant of abuses in His name. If you think God is fiction, this book will clarify your thinking, and motivate you in the fight against superstition and bigotry.
Either way, this is one of the important books of our time.

No Holds Barred

An excellent perspective of Christian and Muslim faiths and he doesn't stop there, he also slaps around Mother Theresa and Ghandi. His narration is deplorable--the beginning of each sentence is audible, but the ending is practically inaudible.

Essential and eloquent

Hitch's anti-theist legacy lives on. Oh my god how I miss this man. Pun intended.

Hitchens Classic

I could listen to Hitch for days and with the audiobook it was great to have the book read by the author. His dissection of religious history is so informative and his inclusion of famous philosophers really made this book for me.

Use the playback speed and :30 rewind features

As stated by others, having Hitchens as narator is both an attraction and stumbling point for the work. This is a thought provoking topic by nature and having it read to you at a high rate of speed, with accent leaves one looking for that 0:30 backward button time and again. Don't let this detur you. It was a pleasure. I slowed down the rate of playback just a bit and it helped immensely. I also located the books text online so I could find the spelling of the philosopher's names being speedilly garbled into my ear. I plan on a second listening so I may collect the names and ideas for deeper investigation.

Enjoy ... I did.

Truth. Honesty. Delivered unapologetically.

Christopher Hitchens will always be one of the greatest minds of humanism and atheism. This book is a tale of the origins of religion, it's fallacies and it's evil nature.

Echos my thoughts from early childhood.

I've gone back and forth with my spiritual beliefs ever since I can remember. This book says aloud all the things that so many of us think, but are afraid to talk about - just in case we're wrong, LOL! This book makes sense, is logical, and because it speaks the truth in so many ways, it is very scary at times. Not scary in terms of being an atheist, but scary in terms of believing in God to the point of Holy Wars and Suicide Bombers.

I lost my faith not after some personal tragedy or great loss, but after reading the Bible from beginning to end.

This is a well thought out piece of work by a serious-minded author whose sense cannot be denied.
