Unlikely pig owners Steve and Derek got a whole lot more than they bargained for when the designer micropiglet they adopted turned out to be a full-sized 600-pound sow! In the best-selling tradition of pet memoirs such as Oogy, Dewey, and Giant George, the story of Esther the Wonder Pig shows how families really do come in all shapes and sizes.
In the summer of 2012, Steve Jenkins was contacted by an old friend about adopting a micropiglet. Though he knew his partner, Derek, wouldn't be enthusiastic, he agreed to take the adorable little pig anyway, thinking he could care for her himself. Little did he know, that decision would change his and Derek's lives forever.
It turned out there was nothing "micro" about Esther, and Steve and Derek had actually signed on to raise a full-size commercial pig. Within three years tiny Esther grew to a whopping 600 pounds. After some real growing pains and a lot of pig-size messes, it became clear that Esther needed much more space, so Steve and Derek made another life-changing decision: They bought a farm and opened the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary, where they could care for Esther and other animals in need.
Funny, heartwarming, and utterly charming, Esther the Wonder Pig follows Steve and Derek's adventure - from reluctant pig parents to farm-owning advocates for animals.

"An inspirational, enjoyable read, especially for animal lovers." (Booklist)
"Funny, moving, and heartwarming. The greatest love story ever told between two men and their pig. " (Ricky Gervais)
"First, Jenkins and Walter opened their hearts to one very special pig, and now they are opening their doors and letting us in, too. Esther the Wonder Pig is a tender, funny story that manages to sneak up behind you when you're least expecting it and change your life. Be prepared to fall in love-with a pig." (Jasmin Singer, author of Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir and cohost of Our Hen House)
I listened the the last two hours of this book while on a hike in the early morning of Sunday, June 12th. I marveled at the profound love that Derek and Steve have not only for each other but for Esther and all the other animals in their lives. I laughed, I cried, I hit rewind to hear parts again. It's the best love story ever.
Then I got in my car and turned on NPR and heard the horrifying news of the mass shooting in Orlando. The love radiating from Steve, Derek and Esther has carried me through. This is the best book in my library. I give it DOUBLE five stars in all categories. ❤️❤️❤️
This book is a MUST read!!!
This book will change your way of thinking about ALL farm animals! EVERY animal IS Esther & deserves to live a beautiful life free of harm.
We love you Esther, Steve & Derek ❤🐽
Editor missing - tone deaf book starting with unnecessary cursing & repeated Hollywood allusions. Yes this is a natural concept for a tv or full length movie, but its fans really are all ages and that was an easy mindset to adopt instead of what was published. Expected kids books & a sequel should right that misstep. The writer finally gets the message Esther has been transmitting all along - live compassionately, love unconditionally. An important & inspiring tale to share dampened by a too judge-y and cloying tone which having author perform amplified problem. Today everyone wants to be/is a star in their own eyes. But the guy behind the curtain - or the pig here behind the story - is the real star who will shines thru: thanks Esther, great job!
Amazing! I cried happy tears at the end of this book because of how inspirational Esther is. In the short time she made an impact on Steve, Derek, and the world. Thank you for opening up so much about sweet Esther!
Listened to this book in 1 day. Such a great story of two guys and their colorful gang of furbabies, especially Esther! Compassion for animals is contagious 😀
I've already listened to the book twice... and I am certain that I will listen to it again and again!
The description of Steve trying to wrestle an oiled up Esther out of their bed had me rolling on the floor laughing.
I couldn't stop once I started listening, I truly enjoyed listening Esther's story in their own voice.
I've had the great pleasure of volunteering at Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary and have met Steve, Derek and the Queen Esther. It was one of the best days ever! Their story is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to laugh and maybe even experience a few happy tears. I love this family and this book!
I have followed the story of Esther, and to hear Steve read about his beloved family member, Esther the Wonder Pig, was truly an honor! I am SO GLAD Steve was the narrator. His love, humor and compassion just spilled into every word.
I loved this book because the narrator was also a character in the story, and the emotions were true. When Steve got choked up, we all cried! When Steve laughed, we all laughed. And I love that Canadian accent.
No although I knew I had to have the audible version when Steve was on Facebook live reading the book to Esther (anyone have a tissue?).
Yes, and I did!
I alway thought I hated audiobooks, until I bought this one.
"So heartwarming x"
Couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. But I'm so glad I got the audio book version, Listening to Steve saying his,Derek and Esther's story just makes it even more special than it is x
"this will change hearts and minds"
the audio version became available whilst I was awaiting my hard copy of the book to arrive in the UK. not my usual format but heck I wanted the whole story. LOVE this story - it has changed my whole world. Esther found her voice through her Dads and their gentle and often hair-raising story is one we can all learn from. unconditional love and respect for all nature.
I bought the book because I love Esther and wanted to support the work of her dads. I wasn't expecting it to be an amazing book, but it is the first book I have ever had on audible that I listened to the whole of in one sitting :) made me so happy, thank you!
Fantastic narrator- it is so important and he did a great job.
The tangible distress of the urine-soaked house and the sobbing dads scrubbing the basement. That moment lead them to true happiness.
