Publisher's summary

Author Alex Kershaw is widely praised for his enthralling nonfiction. In the harrowing war saga Escape from the Deep, he recounts the incredible exploits of the U.S. Navy's deadliest World War II submarine, U.S.S. Tang. From one end of the Pacific theater to the other - dodging mines and depth charges from hundreds of enemy vessels along the way - the 80 men of the Tang became legends. By 1944, they had undertaken more combat actions, including direct surface engagements, and sunk more Japanese ships than any other Allied submarine. Even after the Tang was accidentally sunk by one of her own malfunctioning torpedoes and the nine surviving crewmen were captured by a Japanese patrol boat, their uncommon courage allowed them to persevere through months of inhuman torture before finally being liberated.

Gripping Story of Survival from WW2 Submarine Sink

Would you listen to Escape From the Deep again? Why?

Yes It had a suspenseful plot. The fact that it is a true story makes it the more amazing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Escape From the Deep?

The agonizing decisions the crew has to make in their attempts to escape the sunken sub.

What does Richard Poe bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

A very matter of fact reading that doesn't color the story bit let's the facts speak for themselves making them even more poignant.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The remorse that the captain had even years later that not all the men had been saved.

Any additional comments?

This is an excellent book not only for those interested in military history but for those who enjoy a good human interest story.

Life or Death in a WWll Submarine

A interesting true story that would have made a good movie. The drama and courage, the loss of strength and will to live decide who will survive the strange sinking. The survivers who have gone to the depth of human endurance find they are only starting the ordeal.
A page turner. another example of the greatest Generation.

good book

Good book. I found myself wanting to get back to the story, particularly near the end. It ties in with the book titled "Unbroken, a tale of courage"

For a former submariner like me, who has been there, this may be one of the best submarine book I have ever read.

Interesting seldom told story of WWII

A true story I was unaware of. Very similar, although not as long, as "Unbroken", the story of Louis Zamperini. If you are interested in WWII or submarine warfare you will enjoy this book. Well written as well.
