Publisher's Summary

In this gritty New York Times best-seller, the true story of a crooked deal between the FBI and the Irish Mob is exposed. By providing a penetrating look into the mean streets of mid-1970s South Boston, the author shows how two kids from the neighborhood cross paths again years later, ending in the biggest informant scandal in FBI history.

    "Liked it ....for awhile"

Gangsters, cops, FBI, dames and dolls. Good guys (who weren't), bad guys (depending on circumstance and outlook at any moment). Enjoyed it for awhile - 'til it got too long, too much the "same old". Did finally finish the last chapters after several months hiatus. Humanity finds a way to disappoint.

just the facts this book is a man reading basically history and not a very exciting way narrators tone did little to help this
information because it couldn't be considered a novel.

    "Informative and Well Done"
Where does Black Mass rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Above average

Who was your favorite character and why?

Whitey because he was what every lover of organized crime books wants to read about

What about John Rubinstein and Christopher Evan Welch ’s performance did you like?

It was well done and well read. That seems like something all audio books have, but it is NOT.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Nothing exreme. Just well done.

"The damage of the insider threat"

What does it look like when a member of the legal community shifts his/her allegiance to a criminal power? I give you John Connoly.

Nearly 30 years of criminal activity in South Boston was actively defended by FBI agents. This book thoroughly examines the history as told by two Boston reporters. Research conducted includes eye-witness reports, grand jury testimony, and FBI records. Some may call this book dry. For me, the insights and realities were delivered in a way that was both exciting and informative.

I read this book as another view of what insider threats can do to a person, an organization, and in this case, an entire community. The FBI reputation was devastated. South Boston's very anatomy was changed forever. The criminal underworld gained unprecedented ground.

"Interesting Story - can't wait to see the movie"

I love "true stories" that are made into books & movies. the narrator did a good job with keeping his voice in such a way the story gets boring or mundane.

"Too many facts to keep track of for audio format"

Bought this book about the time the movie came out. The movie looked interesting so hoped as in most cases the book would be more in depth and explain the state of mind that a movie has to leave to the viewer to interpret. Unfortunately instead of a narrative like the movie, the book is more of a documentary. With so many names, date and places it is difficult to keep track of them all. When they are referenced in later chapters it is hard to remember their relevance. In a print book you could simply flip back and review, but that is hard to do with an audio book.
This book is well written, interesting and a complete accounting of the crime career of Whitey Boldger. If that is what you looking for buy the print version. Hopefully someone is working on a novel more like the movie. I would like to listen to that.

For full effect, blast a Dropkick Murphys song before every listening session. Hope the film is half as good.

    "an enjoyable listen"

I am from Boston and knew a lot of people from "Southie". We all know the story , lived and breathed it several times over!! Buttttt.... This book has provided me with details I hadn't heard of before!! It is well written and wonderfully narrated. I have read the book "Whitey" which was amazing. But I wanted to learn more details of the true alliance between the FBI and Bulger, that made the monster become the biggest crime lord in Boston. My chin dropped and mouth covered countless times during my listen. Couldn't believe what I became to know as fact regarding his climb and reign of power. His brother Billy wasn't an angel as most of us thought. Bulger had so many pieces of the puzzle how could he not rise as he did. Whether you are familiar with his story or just want to learn for the first time. This is the book to listen to!! Be patient in the beginning there is a slow pace to warm up to but after a bit you are captured by the narrator and the very well written true story. Enjoy!
