Publisher's summary

Optimistic about America’s future? Don’t be.

In his giant New York Times best seller, America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It, Mark Steyn predicted collapse for the rest of the Western World. Now, he adds, America has caught up with Europe on the great rush to self-destruction.

It’s not just our looming financial collapse; it’s not just a culture that seems on a fast track to perdition, full of hapless, indulgent, childish people who think government has the answer for every problem; it’s not just America’s potential eclipse as a world power because of the drunken sailor policymaking in Washington—no, it’s all this and more that spells one word for America: Armageddon.

What will a world without American leadership look like? It won’t be pretty—not for you and not for your children. America’s decline won’t be gradual, like an aging Europe sipping espresso at a café until extinction (and the odd Greek or Islamist riot). No, America’s decline will be a wrenching affair marked by violence and possibly secession.

With his trademark wit, Steyn delivers the depressing news with raw and unblinking honesty—but also with the touch of vaudeville stand-up and soft shoe that makes him the most entertaining, yet profound, columnist on the planet. And as an immigrant with nowhere else to go, he offers his own prescription for winning America back from the feckless and arrogant liberal establishment that has done its level best to suffocate the world’s last best hope in a miasma of debt, decay, and debility. You will not read a more important—or more alarming, or even funnier—book all year than After America.

Critic reviews

“Mark Steyn is a modern day Jeremiah with a quiverful of devastating one-liners, nailing what the liberals have done to our country. He presents an alarming—and frighteningly convincing—prophecy of where we’re headed. The choice is stark—we either listen to Steyn and act on his recommendations or face economic and cultural armageddon.” (Mark Levin)
“Mark Steyn has done it again. In his new book, After America, he clearly defines the dangerous signals which show America is embracing the same doomed path as the failed European economies, and how vital it is to implement and avoid policies right now to prevent us from the same fate.” (Sean Hannity)
“Only Mark Steyn can write about the decline of America and leave you laughing.” (Ann Coulter)

Mark Steyn Rocks! Eh?!

For a Canadian, or any other humanoid on the planet for that matter, Steyn has a keen interest in life, liberty and the pursuit thereof. His witty humor makes the serious subjects he covers more palatable - much like a sour pickle dipped in chocolate. Steyn is spot-on with his observations from around the world and here in North America. I am glad that Mark read his material because you can hear him cringe at some of his observations and nobody would be able to deliver the comedic timing for his subtle punch lines. Like Nostradamus, Steyn is prophetic with his observations and I am going to bet on Mark because I also see the American public very willing to take the poison pill from media and big government.

LOVE Mark Steyn!!!

He's the smartest guy in America, and I was blue when the book ended. The narration was perfect (by the author), and await with baited breath for "A Disgrace to the Profession" to be released on audiobook. He's the best!!

Most predictive book I've ever read

I listen to hours of politics a day. My only hobby is politics. I waste my life on this nonsense. Yet this man's predictions are close to the best I have ever seen. If you are looking for a super fast pace intro to the problems that are befalling this modern age. This ten+ year old book will give you a perfect briefing of it where we are at

Most evocative writer on the west

Steyn has the prized capability to marry clarity of thought with expression, humor and fact. A great listen, made better by his rolling prose and distinctive voice.

Loved It

Even though this book was written in 2011 Mark Steyn was spot on about China, illegal immigration, Islam, our corrupt politicians and their out of control spending.

Important and Depressing

Would you listen to After America again? Why?

No - it's not the type of book to re-read.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

This is non-fiction, so this question is meaningless.

Did Mark Steyn do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

There weren't different characters, but Steyn did an excellent job in giving the right tone to various folks he quoted, and conveying the sense of preposterousness appropriate to the nanny-state kleptocrats he is excoriating.

If you could give After America a new subtitle, what would it be?

"We're Doomed."

Any additional comments?

Steyn's book shows us where we're headed, down the doomed path of European socialism, with economic and moral decline, the rise of violence, incivility, the end of the American dream. It is an important book—everyone should read it—but there's part of me that wishes I'd have remained blissfully ignorant.
