100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (And Al Franken is #37) | [Bernard Goldberg]

100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (And Al Franken is #37)

Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at "ordinary" Americans and detest so much of what this country is about); the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they're smart just because they're famous); the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat); the Intellectual Thugs, and many more.

Publisher's Summary

Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at "ordinary" Americans and detest so much of what this country is about); the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they're smart just because they're famous); the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat); the Intellectual Thugs (big-wigs at some of our best colleges, whose views run the gamut from left-wing to far left-wing); and many more.

Goldberg names names, profiling the villains in his rogues' gallery, one by one, from 100 down to 1, and yes, you-know-who is #37. But Goldberg doesn't just round up the usual suspects we have come to know and detest. He also exposes some of the people who operate away from the limelight but still manage to pull a lot of strings and do all sorts of harm to our culture.

100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is about a country where as long as anything goes, sooner or later everything will go.

"Some good points (really), kinda partisan."

    Hello,

Yes, the writer does have some good points, people are not biggots for not liking Janet Jackson desperate attempt to sell a few extra CD's with her superbowl performance. The book is somewhat funny and yes it isn't purely conservative.

It does point to some people I never heard of and some who for the sake of there career quite happily pretend to be principled.

The book writing style is like the top 100 music list starting from 100, 5 of these in a row are funny. Listening to the full 100 cast is definately tedious. (the person who thought hurricanes should have more "black" names was funny and insightful, I never knew there was such a thing as a "black name").

Al in all a great book if you want to work yourself up(being a liberal) or get some cheap shots(if you're conservative). A mildly funny, somewhat informative original list if you're none of the above. Hopefully this helps you on deciding a bit.

    "Entertaining, but not balanced"

I liked this book and laughed, nodded, agreed quite a bit- mainly because I am a conservative libertarian.

I was hoping for a bit more balanced view of 100 wackos that would also cover some of the right wing "kooks" as well- maybe challenge some of the things that I believe in that others may find wacky. No luck here.

So, it boils down to this: If you are conservative at heart, you will find yourself agreeing and laughing and enjoying this one. If you are liberal and you can "laugh at yourself" you will probably hang in there for the first 1/3 of the book before you wish you burned your credit on "It Takes a Villiage" or some such.

    "An eye opener"

I love it! I did not know all of the people in the book - like the rap stars and people at the TV networks but enjoyed reading about them.

    "Strong Language--Recycled Ideas"

I bought this audiobook from Audible and found it very easy listening. The audiobook probably works better than the paper version. Mr. Goldberg has the voice of television and therefore sounds convincing. But, some parents who listen in the car with children should be aware that the recording has some very strong language.

Mr. Goldberg bemoans the fact that many of America's fatuous celebrities are self-indulgent, self-important, disingenuous, and often crude loudmouths, lacking humility and dignity. They are suicidally contributing to a general decline in civility and urbanity, which are the hallmarks of a great society. I think he is right. But this slow process of degeneration has been going on since the end of the First World War. It is what happens when faith in anything important--anything at all -- is lost and all that is left are diversions and cheap ridicule. Unfortunately, the book sounds like an angry man venting his frustration at a world which holds nothing sacred except vain humanism and opportunism. His book is a weaker version of Duncan William's book Trousered Apes published in 1971 and now out of print.

Perhaps Mr. Goldberg's next book will give us another 100 people who hold out some hope for America. Let's hope that he can replace all that anger with some optimism about our future. How about it Bernard?

    "Who cares about balanced!"

Mr. Goldberg has what it takes to push the editorial envelope. It is a pleasure to know someone can tell it like it is without worrying about being politically correct or offending some nut case.
Just another great book by a great man.

    "Hey-I actually listened to this!"

Unlike so many of the one-star wonders that emerge from the woodwork at Audible to trash stuff they won't bother to listen to, I actually tried this out. Sure, 90% or so of the people Bernie puts on the list are liberal, but what would you expect from Al Franken? I imagine that 100% of his list would be conservative, and George Bush himself would probably be in every slot from 1 to 10. So lighten up.

Truth is, Bernie has some impactful criticisms of those that are on his list. They're on there for a reason, and Bernie spells it out. Give this a fair listen and evaluate it for yourself.

    "YUP... They're all liberals... NOT."

Great job pointing out so much decay taking place - and so much of it gradually - virtually unnoticed.

Many on the list are a-political - and some fall just to the right of Attila the Hun! Because Mr. Goldberg is a known "conservative" (ooooooohhhhh.) his book is being panned by many whom I believe either haven't read (heard) it, or couldn't agree with a conservative with a loaded .45 pointed at them and their life depending on it.

My neighbor sat in my kitchen and literally stated, "John Kerry is no liberal"... and he and I agree on more than 50% of the people listed!

    Well done.

    "Easy, insightful read"

Pretty basic book. Tells you some things you should already know. Not for the liberally minded individual as it may not be to their liking, though I think the author nails it. On some people he is probably a bit harsh, whereas others he plainly describes their lunacy.

    "Seeing America better"

I buy a lot of audible books and jog with a lot of books-on-tape. This is the first one I listened non-stop. If you think he's wrong you probably are under thirty and have not lived in another country as I have (six year in China). The Americans Goldberg lists are screwing America up far more than George Bush. In fact Goldberg's #1 is a hero among many Chinese youth for showing that America is immoral and a worthy object to hate (Who's #1? Buy the audio and find out.).

I remember reading about a man who survived weeks at sea on a rubber raft. When he came back he could not believe the beauty of the green grass, the mulicolored flowers and the shimmering leaves of the tall shade trees. Coming back from China I could not believe how fat and cynical Americans are. Goldfarb's sees that we need to trim down our diet of cultural screw-ups and build up on the honor, respect and love that is a more important part of our American heritage.

"I give him 2 for being honest, but..."

again, this is one man's opinion. Someone who claims he was wronged by a lot of people. My biggest argument is his beef with Al Franken. I saw the interview in question in which he claims he was put in a trap. Funny how he was trapped with an actual quote from his book. Come on, admit you screwed up. It's just like when Ann Coultier claimed the New York Times didn't mention Dale Earnhart's death until three days afterwards. I worked in a bookstore and it was on the first page! He also spends way too much time attacking celebrities. Personally, I don't care what the political point-of-view of a actress or athelete. All in all, a lot of ranting about people that don't fit his idea of being American. Well, I guess I'm #101.
