Publisher's summary

1 Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Celebrated as a local treasure and heaped with national praise, Rose provides a roller-coaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor - in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland.

They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair. And stories about refrigerators.

1 Dead in Attic freeze-frames New Orleans, caught between an old era and a new, during its most desperate time, as it struggles out of the floodwaters and wills itself back to life.

Still Makes Me Hurt

I got involved with animal rescue after Katrina hit, was a nutcase by the time Rita swept through (even though I hadn't been there yet, but the images, my imagination, the extent of my caring about the horror were enough), and had full blown PTSD by the time I came back after two weeks in New Orleans helping out when the state was kicking out all out-of-state rescues. The place, ALL of those parishes, are dear to me. I HAD to get this book because the title: 1 Dead in Attic was pretty much something you saw everywhere (along with 4 dogs DOA, 3 cats DOA in Bathroom, things like that.)
I still grieve.
But I felt like I was given a little piece of "home," if you will, when I listened to Chris Rose's book. It's a series of his articles, all the happenings, all his thoughts, things that went on after Katrina, for over a year, the horror, the heartache, the struggles and triumphs. The depression and sense of loss. The rebirth (sometimes with meds needed).
I guess this might not be everybody's cup of tea. Katrina no longer holds the nation's attention, but it's a wonderful book in its own right, a touching one worthy of a listen.
And Bronson Pinchot? He has just grown into one of the most fearless narrators I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! Anger, exasperation, humor, tenderness, robotic depression, gentle love, all tones and expressions seem so easy for him to convey.
Wow to this book.
Simply:
Wow

Excellent Book Slaughtered by Narrator

I wanted to send this as a gift, to a friend who is always on the road. I am glad I listened to this audio version first.
I love this book!
But, I was in shock when I began to listen to it be butchered aloud!
It is painful to hear Bronson Pinchot did not even try to correctly pronounce street names, let alone feign some since of one of the many New Orleans accents!.
I could never recommend this audio reading of such an excellent book.

Fascinating, Sad, Happy, Very Funny, Emotional!

I absolutely loved this listen! It was so easy to listen to, and it grabbed me from the start and did not let go until the very end. Chris poured his heart out in an effort to tell us what Katrina did to his beloved city and to him, personally. The chapters are very short, taken from newspaper articles he wrote over the course of a year or so after Katrina hit. As the book proceeds, you can feel him sinking into depression--and you know immediately as his mood improves or dives. There were parts where I could actually feel the sadness and hopelessness, Then his mood would lift and he was laugh-out-loud funny (the Chocolate City!)

Chris got very personal and I applaud his sharing his deepest sadness and despair with us. I am sure he helped many folks realize that asking for help and taking medication can be a true life saver.

Come take this trip with Chris Rose. It is like no other book I have listened to. Bronson Pinchot's narration was fabulous. He is worth searching out for other listens, he is THAT good. It didn't bother me a bit that he might have mispronounced street names or that his NO accent was not spot on. He brought so much else to the character of Chris.

This is a great listen and I highly recommend it.

(I truly wish Chris Rose was busy writing about the current world situation. something much bigger than New Orleans, devastation on a much higher level. I know he could do it but what a challenge!!)

Bronson Pinchot is a Revelation

Any additional comments?

I concur with all the accolades written about this book. My purpose in submitting this review is to share a deep appreciation for Bronson Pinchot's narration. There are several narrators working today that inspire me to take a chance with a book of which I may not have heard. Bronson Pinchot just got added to that very short list.

Missed opportunity

Chris Rose's column from post-Katrina New Orleans is witty, heartbreaking and beautifully written. And if you've ever heard Rose speak, you can hear his very distinct voice when reading 1 Dead in Attic. The Audible version unfortunately does not have the author narrating his own work, and honestly it's not the same book without him... I took a music history tour with Rose last year when I was visiting NOLA and thought Rose was an incredible showman. Sharp, rambunctious and passionate, Rose embodied an overly-animated Anthony Bourdain. Not having Rose narrate his own words was truly a missed opportunity...

Great recap of Katrina

I chose this book because I wanted to hear stories of Katrina. More than sufficient.

Staggering chronicle

One of the most powerful things I’ve read or heard. It’s must for anyone who has had to start over, start anything or survive anything. Rose’s writing is eloquent yet unvarnished. Pinchot’s reading is in remarkable sync with the stories—he sounds like Rose himself, feeling every word. It will stay with you.

Disappointing

Who approved this narrator? He continuously mispronounces the names of some pretty well-known streets and places throughout the entire book. Tchoupitoulas, Metairie, St. Roch, Jacques-Imo’s, Marigny etc… It’s ironic too because at the beginning of the book there’s a part that says you should ask the locals how to pronounce the street names.

Annoying narration aside, I thought this book was going to cast a wider net and talk about lots of different people’s experiences. It’s mostly just Chris Rose’s thoughts and experiences which is fine but doesn’t really match the description of the book in my opinion. His tone is a bit off-putting as well. It’s like he’s trying to sell the idea of New Orleans to everyone who lives elsewhere while also telling them they’ll never “get it” anyway.

I love New Orleans which has is why I listened to this audiobook but I found myself only mildly interested in the content. Some parts of it were pretty cringeworthy too, like the part where he writes about his daughter saying “look daddy, I’m dancing like the brown people” for example. He seems weirdly out of touch for someone who claims to be so cultured. Overall I think this book had a lot of missed potential and would have benefitted from better editing.

Boring.

Account of the boring story of Katrina. Not an account of people who were in the trenches of the disaster. I cannot finish this book.

Narration

Love this book - just wish Chris Rose had narrated the book himself with his distinctive accent. Then is would have sounded like real New Orleans .
