Publisher's summary

In Ava’s dreams, her son, Noah, looks just the way she remembers him: a sweet two-year-old in rolled-up jeans and a red sweatshirt. When Ava wakes, the agonizing truth hits her all over again. Noah went missing two years ago, and his body has never been found. Almost everyone, including Ava’s semi-estranged husband, Wyatt, assumes the boy drowned after falling off the dock near their Church Island home.

Ava has spent most of the past two years in and out of Seattle mental institutions, shattered by grief and unable to recall the details of Noah’s disappearance. Now she’s back at Neptune’s Gate, the family estate she once intended to restore to its former grandeur. Slowly, her strength is returning. But as Ava’s mind comes back into focus, her suspicions grow. Despite their apparent concern, Ava can’t shake the feeling that her family and her psychologist know more than they’re saying. But are they really worried for her well-being - or anxious about what she might discover?

Unwilling to trust those around her, Ava secretly visits a hypnotist to try and restore her memories. But the strange visions and night terrors keep getting worse. Ava is sure she’s heard Noah crying in the nursery, and glimpsed him walking near the dock. Is she losing her mind, or is Noah still alive? Ava won’t stop until she gets answers, but the truth is more dangerous than she can imagine. And the price may be more than she ever thought to pay….

Exciting story and gripping!

A gripping story that keeps you captivated until the end. This could lead to sequel book.

Couldn't turn it off.

I really enjoyed this book! It drew me in from the start, and kept me listening til the end. I loved the twists and turns. A real who-dunnit that kept me guessing until the last chapter. Despite some reviewers' bad opinion of the narrator, I found her voice to be very well-suited to the characters and the storyline. Some of the "sound effects", like "creak" and "bamm" were a little corny, but not distracting. Also the inflection on the proper words was very good until the last couple hours. I guess if I sat and tore it apart I could find a couple places where I would have read a line differently, but it really did not affect the meaning or the the storyline itself. I admired the main character's persistence, and was happy that the romance was not overdone. I also thought the ending was very realistic and believable. Really worth the credit!

Tough to get into

It took a long time to actually get into the book. Eventually the story gets good but many parts dragged out.

I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!

This book and narration worked for me in every aspect, and I highly recommend it - especially to those, who like me, enjoy a solid, beautifully-written, suspenseful yarn! I recommended it to a friend, who also gave it high marks. Thank you, Audible.com, for another winner, and as usual, from a very satisfied fan.

Over "acted" and frustrating plot.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

At first the mystery in this novel drew my in, but by the end I just wanted to get it over with. The plot line of this mystery went overboard to the point of ridiculous with it's plot twists. By the end the narrator's voice was annoying - or maybe it was just the main character herself.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lisa Jackson? Why or why not?

I've been enjoying many great Laura Lipmann reads, and decided to switch it up. I'm going back to Laura.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

This book would probably be better as a shortened, edited movie. It might actually have potential on screen.

Did not need to be so long

Decent story but it took way too long to unfold. The author uses the term "gas lighting" way too much to the point I was tired of hearing it. There were some twists towards the end I was not expecting but overall it fairly predictable. I would try another book by this author.

Some positive thoughts-some negative thoughts

Story line was good although it became overwhelming towards the end. When the author interjected sexual thoughts of the characters, they often times seemed contrived and out of place, especially the thoughts of the police detective. And how many times can you use the term "gas lighting" in one book? I think the author exceeded that limit. After saying all that, it was a good book of guessing "who dunnit."

No... I know the ending... duh!

What did you like best about this story?

It was SUPER suspensful from the beginning to the end and incorporated just enough sexual tension, etc...

The narrarator was the best I've ever listened to... she could read anything and make it amazing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the truths came out! Crazy twists at every moment.

I did want to know...

This was the first Lisa Jackson book I have had on Audible, and I enjoyed it very much. The narrator Christina Traister did a really great job bringing the characters to life, and there were a lot of characters she had to work with. The story was good and was for the most part believable. I could see all the crazy people as a part of a family all living together in that great big house on the island, getting on each other's nerves. I suspected Ava wasn't quite as crazy as her husband made her out to be about 6 chapters in, but to find out more, you will just have to listen to the book. Oh, and just one more point. People who are in a wheelchair or are no longer able to walk are not referred to as handicapped. Please use the correct term "person with a disability", or someone who is disabled.
