Yeats Is Dead! | [Roddy Doyle, Conor McPherson, Gene Kerrigan, more]

Yeats Is Dead!

Fifteen of Ireland's finest writers collaborated on this murder mystery that involves searching for the only manuscript of an unpublished novel by James Joyce. Raucous, raunchy, and completely hilarious, Yeats Is Dead! is a diabolically entertaining mulligan stew of a novel. James Joyce would be proud.

Publisher's Summary

"I think he was dead before I shot him."

With these auspicious words begins a murder mystery so utterly unlike any other that it took 15 of Ireland's finest writers (working well below their peak) to bring it to its unlikely conclusion. The plot involves a mad search for the only manuscript of an unpublished novel by James Joyce, and features a stellar cast - including a sadistic sergeant with the unlikely name of Andy Andrews and the unforgettable mob boss Mrs. Bloom, a woman "who had tried everything but drew the line at honesty." Raucous, raunchy, gratuitously violent and completely hilarious, Yeats Is Dead! is a diabolically entertaining mulligan stew of a novel. James Joyce would be proud.

Yeats is Dead! was edited by Joseph O'Connor, whose novels include Cowboys and Indians, Desperadoes, The Salesman and Inishowen.

The narrator, Ciraran O'Reilly's, stage performances include The Irish and How They Got That Way, The Corn is Green, and Da, Summer. His film include The Devil's Own and A Further Gesture and he has appeared on television in Law and Order SVU, One Life to Live, and As The World Turns. Authors' royalties are being donated toAmnesty International.

What the Critics Say

"Chapter after chapter of competitive wackiness, each author striving to snooker the next with tortuous twists and turns, with maximum silliness." (The Guardian)

    "Worth a listen but overlong"

Would benefit from an abridged version.
    Well dramatized.
I really wanted to like this, and did, tremendously, for the first chapter especially. And the next couple were equally great, but it started to go downhill in the middle and never really recovered. An interesting idea to get a number of authors to "run with the story" to wherever their imagination takes them, but it just got really long and seemed to lose the thread - a little like this review maybe - and I think a bit of abridging may have been in order, though I'm not sure how this could be acheived without stepping on the toes of specific authors.

    "A surprise in every chapter"

This was fun to listen to! It took a chapter or so to get into the spirit of the book, but once you do it's a real joy. Just when you think you know what is going to happen next, a new author takes over and turns everything upside down. I was sorry when it ended!
