Publisher's summary

The author of nearly two dozen bestsellers, including Orchid Beach and Swimming to Catalina, Stuart Woods unfailingly entertains legions of fans with his suspenseful novels. Fifth in the series featuring the dashing, sophisticated Stone Barrington, this captivating thriller offers nonstop action.

Stone and his ex-partner, Dino, are facing every policeman’s worst fear. The people close to them are being murdered, probably by someone the two of them sent to prison in the past. To complicate matters, Stone finds himself involved in a distracting relationship with a woman who may be as dangerous as she is beautiful. As the body count multiplies, Stone and Dino race against time to find clues to the brilliant killer’s identity.

Through glitzy restaurants, dark back alleys, and posh summer communities, the suave Stone Barrington faces mobsters, a bomber, and a former lover to get his man.

“After nearly two dozen books, Woods can still surprise readers.”—Booklist

Not a favorite

First allow me to be fair I didn’t start at the beginning of the Stone Barrington series. My introduction to the series began with Tony Roberts. After listening to this gentlemen reading of the story left me cold. He lacks the range of Mr Roberts. Now to the story the USA version of James Bond slightly off his game. He had capable assistance available to him to willing to at least investigate the problem. His sole request to the this offer was a small request. Stone suddenly needed more assistance to assist Stone out serious trouble but didn’t ask for help. Fortunately, the person offering the help acted on his own. The good part of that was that Stone could not be involved in how the problem was resolved. The reason this a weak part of the story is that the assistance came from someone wanting Stone to marry his daughter. This was after a couple of tumbles in bed. And a desire to have a reason to dispose her philandering husband. That would allow he and Stone avoid tangible proof of involvement. The fact is he didn’t need Stone. There several of these things in the story. Add the weak parts of the story and the less than thrilling reading you get disappointed.

A Great Audiobook!

This is my 6th Stone Barrington audiobook, and I find it thrilling. I listen to my audiobooks while traveling and I regret when I have to pause this book. I can't wait to get back to it.

The narrater is ok, but I think Tony Roberts does the best job with the Stone Barrington books. This is why I gave it four instead of five stars.

I don't understand the negative reviews. It confusing me as they must be very hard to please for an audiobook. If they would only mention an audiobook they thought was great, then I would have something to compare and find their review of value. Without knowing what they thought was a quality book, I can't give any credit to their review since I found this audiobook well worth the time and the money. I really enjoy listening to this story and it makes my travel time pass too quickly. This is all I hope for in an audiobook and this one more than meets the bill for me.

New Installment of Barrington Muzak

These Stone Barrington Books have a dated Playboy 1960s Magazine feel. I wonder why the covers weren't done by Leroy Neiman? They should have followed the decade of Leroy Neiman, as if James Bond quit the service became an American and no longe had to face the publishers' sex censors.

There's thin plotting but lots of pace punctuated with more sex romps than paragraphs. The things are aimed at men looking for fantasy escapism with a dash of porn flavored mystery. Still, so far Woods, who is a journeyman mystery writer, teased me into to buying this book with the cliff hangar ending to the last installment.

And 'Worst Fear's" no-ending ending's piqued my curiosity enough to buy the next in the series to distract me at gym workouts.

It's an OK listen especially since Woods snagged Richard Ferrone to bring the ensemble cast to life. I'm beginning to think of Stone Barrington Audio as Muzak of mystery stories.

Worst Fears Realized

Am enjoying the early novels. So many stories I have not read, it is great to hear all about Stone's start. And the women!

Great, as always!

In the style of Stone Barrington, Stuart Woods continues to develop his characters. Although a bit dated in terms of using the house phones and often inconvenienced because a phone wasn't available, this novel still reads like a great detective who-done-it.

No Continuity

I read series books in order. Was surprised to find the GIRL baby born in the previous book and become a BOY. I get very annoyed when authors do not make sure their series books have no continuity

it didnt close out all the stories to be continued

It was short. I dont like character voice changes but Dino was believable after a few chapters!
Dolce was an unnecessary character too much of a dangerous connection for stone. I hope he stops sleeping with everyone. But I cant stop listening even if I know hes gonna sleep with everyone! But now hes messi g with the mafia!

A good listen

This wasn't a great book, but a very pleasant one to listen to. The reader was excellent and the story really held my interest. I found myself looking for periods of quiet time to listen to the next chapter. So, all in all, it was worthwhile.
