In the chill of the Cold War, two Norwegians are shot dead after straying into Soviet wilderness, killings that will bind together three people in a web of treachery and passion: Halvard Starheim, veteran explorer, torn by the deaths of his friends and his love for a beautiful woman; Ragna Johansen, the attractive widow of one of the dead men, on a desperate search for love and fulfilment; Rolf Berg, brilliant Norwegian journalist, whose secret other life holds the key to a deadly conspiracy.
The mission for the truth will lead them to a final confrontation in the freezing wastes of an Arctic Wolf Winter...

If you're after an absorbing story and feel like being transported to another time and place (in this case early '60s Arctic-Circle Norway against a backdrop of the Cold War and NATO politics) I highly recommend this. I particularly loved the evocative descriptions of place (and Francis has mercifully avoided cliched similes for this!) , it has a gripping story-line that kept me listening almost non-stop through the second half. The narrator does a great job of bringing the characters and story to life. I even learnt something about Lapp (Sami) geo-politics and what more could you ask for out of a novel?
... and I was not disappointed. Clare Francis here did a great job in creating a nice setting, I could almost feel the cold. It got my attention to the end like when I read the book...

Look, OK will cover it. Not really me and bought on a whim because I missed the Northern European place names and environment delivered through the Tattoo Series but it was all a bit silly in the end. No that's a bit hard, look it is light easy listening and not taxing so if you have a spare credit and nowhere to go, well give it a try.
The excitement and nerve tingling anticipation
the book was interesting and informative about a country and period that has not always been taken into account
When I was listening to the description of the extreme cold and how glad I was that I was inside in a cozy and warm chair
The writing approaches everything with such detail, you feel that you too are on a vast plain of snow stretching forever where time has stopped and each tiny blip on the horizon catches and keeps your attention for awhile. I liked that much of the time and it fit well with the setting. If the character or situation interested me, that amount of detail seemed to work. She got inside the heads of her characters and what they did made sense from their point of view.
But for me, certainly the last third seemed drawn out and I could fast forward several times and miss few of the plot developments. I probably will read another of her books, but not right away.
Beautifully constructed story, an absolute thriller set in Cold War Norway - Clare Francis' descriptive writing is wonderful. Thoroughly recommended.
"Grip of winter"
This is a brilliant and captivating story which recalls the icy grip of the Cold war, with all the elements of heroism, ruthless treachery, exploitation and love. Bringing out landscape, the Norwegian character of enduranace and tension with their history climate and geography, the polar spin on Ragna's moral compass, this is a very real story. Gripping!
"Simon Russell Beale - brilliant!"
Wolf Winter is certainly worth a second go - the story is fine but it is the reading by Simon RB that makes it really special
The story is a bit of a "slow burn" but some of the descriptions of the deep cold, silence and remoteness of the plateau is most evocative
Simon Russell Beale is a most gifted narrator - never a fault with flawless interpretation of the characters, bringing excitement and suspense in all the right places
Too long for one sitting but it made the daily commute a pleasure!
