Jack Reacher is approached by a Secret Service agent who needs a favor. "I want to hire you to assassinate the Vice President of the United States," she asks. She is the newly appointed head of the VP's security detail and wants Reacher to try to penetrate her team's shield. He has the skills and the stealth and no one knows him. How else can she be sure her protection is truly effective?

What she doesn't tell Reacher - but what he soon discovers - is that a very real and deadly team of assassins has just put the VP in their sights and will stop at nothing to realize their objective. These men have planned well, but they haven't planned on Reacher. For only Reacher has the head and the heart to corner his prey and bring them to justice - without fail.

Don't miss any of Jack Reacher's adventures.

What the Critics Say

“The book is a joyride for listeners, full of false leads, dead ends, concussive bursts of action, and characters who are fully realized and individual. This is as much fun as an audiobook performance can be.” (AudioFile)

“The sixth time's a charm for thriller meister Child, whose latest escapade starring ex-military cop Jack Reacher is handily his most accomplished and most compelling to date.” (Publisher’s Weekly)

“…a thriller of unequaled emotional depth.” (Booklist)

    "Entertaining until..."

I would say "Entertaining until the end," but unfortunately the ending was not there. I am a big fan of Lee Child and the narration of Dick Hill and during the first 7/8ths of the book I was really enjoying the listen. This book has less action and more ???who did it,??? but the plot has many twists and keeps you guessing/thinking. Sadly at the end it seemed that Mr. Child had a page limit or closing deadline and he just quickly, with little depth, touched on wrapping up several loose ends and then the story comes to a quick finish, which left me feeling unsatisfied. I actually listened to the end about 5 separate times as I kept thinking I must have missed some parts.

I would still recommend the listen to fans of Lee Child, but if have not read several books in the series I would strongly recommend reading a few of the other stories first before this one.

    "Good Story With Lackluster Ending..."

The premise of the story was good and had potential to develop into an excellent story but the ending and the ongoing guessing as to who was threatening and why the vice president was being threatened, got a little frustrating. The ending was laughable. After 30/40 years, the motivation for such a threat was not logical. I think that somebody (writers, editors) did not do their job. Somebody signed off on this one based on Lee Child's reputation or something just as stupid. I gave the high stars because overall the story held my interest and because I am a fan of Jack Reacher. Narrator, Dick Hill is at his usual best. He is the voice of Jack Reacher. I wish the ending had more grit, more teeth, more substance that made sense to intelligent readers.

    Any additional comments?

Good Jack Reacher as usual. Dick Hill does a good job for the male parts, but his female parts sound like sleezy, creepy old men! Please get a female to perform female parts of the story.

"Lee needs to do more research"
Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Dick Hill?

    Yes

Has Without Fail turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

Could you see Without Fail being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I have seen the Reacher movie, and listened to th first six books in the series, and I have to say they are all pretty much the same. Same characters, same basic situations and basically the same plots, just different locations. My biggest compliant however is with the attention to detail while describing weapons.

    Possible Spoiler Alert

During the climamatic ending when the bad guys have Reacher cornered, Child makes two glaring mistakes, one of which would have cost Reacher and his companion their lives. It has been proven that a hand gun magazine spring does not lose its integrity being fully loaded for long periods of time, even years. However, Reacher bets his life on this myth.

Secondly, when the bad guy pulls his Glock pistol, he clicked the safety off. Glock pistols are referred to as "Safe Action" pistols because the safetys are internal, and include a trigger safety. There is no external safety to click.

The whole scenario that lead to the conclusion was paper thin and the final ending was ludicrous. Will I listen to more Reacher novels? Probably. However, if you are looking for an alternate author, I highly recommend Vince Flynn and the Mitch Rapp series. His works are plausible, well researched and entertaining.

    "Sad - poor effort"

Sad to say I did not like this book. Very S L O W and never really getting to the point. This book drowned on and on and on and on about such little details that played no part in the big picture. As much as I will be the first guy to stand up and promote these books - don't start with this one.

    Blah!

    "What's not to love"
Would you listen to Without Fail again? Why?

No, I don't listen to, or read books twice, too many more out there to get through!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. This is a very exciting series and I always want to know what's going to happen next and how Reacher is going to save the day this time.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is the voice of Jack Reacher. I think his performance is excellent. I'll only buy a Reacher audiobook if he is the narrator. Other narrators don't do the books justice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Actually there was, it was a bit of a surprise.

    Any additional comments?

I liked that this book went in a slightly different direction to previous Reacher novels. It slowed down a little and was more tactical. That's not to say it was dull, it certainly wasn't, but a bit different. This was good as what's the point in a series if the plot and characters don't develop as they go? I love Jack Reacher and am so glad I finally discovered him!
