Publisher's summary

It is January, and Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is sent to Isle Royale in Lake Superior to learn about managing and understanding wolves, as her home base of Rocky Mountain National Park might soon have its own pack of the magnificent, much-maligned animals. She's lodging in the island's bunkhouse with the famed wolf study team, along with two scientists from Homeland Security, who are assessing the study with an eye to opening the park in the winters - an act that would effectively bring an end to the 50-year project - so that the area can be manned to secure the scrap of border with Canada.

Soon after Anna's arrival, the wolf packs under observation begin to behave in peculiar ways. Giant wolf prints are found, and Anna spies the form of a great wolf from a surveillance plane. The discovery of wolf scat containing alien DNA leads the group to believe that perhaps a wolf/dog hybrid has been introduced to the island.

When a female member of the team is savaged, Anna is convinced she is being stalked, and what was once a beautiful, idyllic refuge becomes a place of unnatural occurrences and danger beyond the ordinary. Alone on an island without electricity or running water, with temperatures hovering around zero both day and night, Anna fights not only for the wolves but for her own survival as well.

A chilling story.

I’ve listened to it twice and visited IR. There is never a dull moment as we follow people trying to work out their personal issues in that isolated place.

My favorite book series of all time

I love the settings for the series. My imagination takes me to each place and situation through Ms. Barr’s words. Ms. Rosenblatt is the PERFECT voice for Anna Pidgeon. If I was younger, I’d be a Park Ranger. Thank you for bringing Anna to life.

Not like the others....

This book was disturbing. It was a great read, but not the typical story for this series.

Adventure, mystery & wolves with Anna Pigeon

January on Michigan's Isle Royale (an island and national park in Lake Superior) is cold and miserable. Anna Pigeon is a Park Ranger whose home park is Rocky Mountain National Park. She's there to learn about the wolves (the park service has been studying wolves for 50+ years and is currently considering importing wolves to her park).
Research Scientists who have been a part of the study team are also there as are two representatives from the Department of Homeland Security. (DHS wants to enhance border security at the U.S. border with Canada, which is a part of the island).
This would result in damaging the study and lead to opening Isle Royale year round.
Isle Royale's beauty is marred when a member of the team is killed by what at first seems to be a wolf. (Although such behavior is unnatural in the wolf community.) The researcher's death and more unusual happenings cause frayed nerves in the group as each wonders about the others around them.

As always, Nevada Barr's national park mysteries are filled with plenty of information that make you want to visit sometime soon as well as adventure and intrigue. I have read 12 books in the series (there are 19) and enjoyed them all. This series does not have to be read in order. I usually choose a book based on my travels. They are especially good as audio books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Note: This book is more descriptive in wild animal and human injuries than most of Barr's books. If such details upset you, you may want to pass this one by. Rape is also discussed.

Good pairing

After a long wait, classic Nevada Barr bursts forth once again, combining her typical respect for nature, low-tech CSI type reportage, mixed with irony and irreverent humor. The setting is, as usual, a dominant character in the novel, and I have put Isle Royale on my list of places to visit. I did miss the presence of some of Anna Pigeon's family from "the mainland", however, her sister Molly and her new husband, Paul. The Anna Pigeon series has one flaw in that these books are just too short, making my escape into the calm and beauty of our national parks an all-too-brief fling.

Anna Pigeon still rocks

I DO love Nevada Barr and her park ranger stories. This is one of the later books, as Anna is well into her middle age, and the author reminds us often of Anna's growing limitations. Anna is as real as any of us for her natural aging. This story is somewhat typical, and perhaps not Ms. Barr's best, but I highly recommend it just the same. As with all her books, the author exposes a part of our wilderness that most of us will never see. She takes us on a detailed tour of each new park site with each of her books, weaving in a bit of mystery, humor, and nature in the process. Learn a bit about wolves while living in a frigid, isolated island habitat. You will come away with a wonderous sense of having experienced a winter-adventure vacation, without the risk of frostbite or the expense. You'll love it.

Too much pain

I completely agree Barbara Rosenblat is supurb, and Barr's books are great but she went over the top in subjecting Anna to pain in this one. Anna's various ordeals were so intricately described it semed that they had become space fillers.
