Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

**Amazing**

Kind of bias as I've read all the Nelson Demille books, but this is another great book with Det. John Corey. Kept me up late at night all week as there are no good places to breat from the reading. A must read for Nelson Demille fans as well as anyone wanting a great story filled with intrigue.

I would have given a five-star overall rating....

... but for the music between chapters. It seemed to be at strategic plot twists that the music was inserted. Well, I know when the plot is twisting. I don't need a herald. My apologies to people who like the music!

Not the same John Corey I fell in love with

The books before this one were awesome and John was funny. In this one he was more annoying than funny in my opinion. While some of it was unbelievable, I still enjoyed the book.

Scott Brick is amazing but I liked his voice for John better in the previous books.

Great Listen-highly recommend!

This was a totally enjoyable listen. I often found myself sitting in the parking lot at work listening, unable to team myself away to go into the office.

The characters were developed very well, and the plot held me until the end.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Yes, the premise is a bit of a stretch (even though it does make you think), and the ending isn't a total surprise, but what a ride! I especially enjoyed the main character, John Corey's relentless, irreverent, but hilarious wit, and his wife and partner, Kate Mayfield's, disgusted response. I often found myself laughing out loud. But this isn't a comedy, and I was intrigued from beginning to end.

Scott Brick's narration was perfect. I can't imagine John Corey any other way. I loved it.

Exactly what you need

Having listened to a couple real disappointments recently, The Ruins and Echo Park, my faith in the action/thriller genre has been restored. Demille's writing style is crisp and tight, even if a little sparse in description, and utlimately engaging. The humor of the main character, John Corey, with his spot on timing and irreverent style matches my own acerbic wit, so I personally found him hilarious at times. And, like anyone trying to quip in every situation, he realistically doesn’t always hit the mark, which to me just enriches the suspension of disbelief.

All in all, a compelling story line, a little cartoonish in the action sequences but a good ride. Enjoy.

Slow Starter but kicks it into gear...

John Corey and Kate Mayfield return and they continue to banter as good as always and John Corey's sassy sarcasm is better than ever. Unfortunately the story building takes too long to develop as well as most of the story build up did not include our beloved John and Kate. The Night Fall and The Lion's Game also took a while to get John going but their early story line was much more interesting. Would I recommend this book? If you love John and Kate then absolutely, if you have not heard of them start with The Lion's Game for John and Kate or even before Kate, John does his magic in Plum Island. To the author Nelson DeMille please keep John and Kate going.

Grew tired of the joking

I enjoyed being able to read another Nelson DeMille title, but I really grew tired of John Corey, and his constant jokes. Here the country is in grave danger, and he is a joke a minute. Thank goodness for the fast forward feature on my iPod!

I also thought the ending was weak. I think there was much more to be written about the actions of their superiors. Maybe that is for the next book??
