Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

Disappointed

I am a big fan of Nelson DeMille's other books, but Wild Fire was so contrived that it felt more like a badly-written James Bond movie. I hate having to say that because DeMille has never disappointed me before. The bad guy just has to gloat over his evil plot to the good guys. Even insane bad guys know that is too risky. Our heroes, Kate and John, do not have compelling enough reason to risk their careers in pulling maverick moves on the investigation. Kate seems to be just along for banter and window dressing, I am sure she would have shut down John's dumb moves in a better-written novel. Contrived plot points put them in the right places at the right times.

On the good side, Scott Brick's narration is stellar as usual, he is my favorite. The banter is witty. I'll definitely listen to any other DeMille books, but this one was a big disappointment.

Great

Another great book by Nelson DeMille. John Corey is such a wise guy -- constantly breaking up the tight tension of the book. This is one of DeMille's best. A great story and great narration.

Awesome book to listen to!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Love the sarcastic nature (pun intended) of the main character. Since this book I have listened to all John Cory books by Nelson Demille and they were all fantastic. I sometimes use his jokes within my circle of friends.

NELSON DEMILLE DOES IT AGAIN

One of the things that I noticed while reading Wild Fire, is how Nelson DeMille uses 3rd person voice in some of his books and also uses 1st person voice in some of his books. Wild Fire is an explosive novel, and it's expertly narrated by Scott Brick. At the end of the book, there's a conversation between Nelson DeMille and Scott Brick, and you get to see the relationship that the author and the narrator have built over the course of only a few blocks. Even though Scott Brick narrates all of the voices in this book, he does an excellent job at separating voices to where the listener can tell the difference between one character and other characters.

I would highly recommend this book and this series to anyone.

Plum island was a great story and believable. This was not on so many levels.

Good read!

Highly recommend this series. Exciting from begging to end, with a great touch of humor.

Corey and Mayfield at it again

Having quite high expectations after listening to both Night fall and Lions game, I can't help but to feel a little disappointed. The story, although built on an interesting idea, just doesn't have the tensity and spark, for a lack of a better word, as the previous two had.
Mind you, the first two books are on my top 5 favorites list on Audible so Wild fire had a high standard to live up to.

Slow and Tedious

This is a good story with an interesting antagonist, however I have to say it is extremely slow and drawn out, even for Nelson Demille. Unlike the Lions Game in which concurrent story lines moved between characters set in the Middle East and the United States, about 80% of Wild Fire follows John Corey and his wife as they figure out the conspiracy -- which the reader knows early in the story. As much as I enjoy John Corey, most of the dialogue is in his first person and the wise-cracking became tiresome. If I was reading this as a hard copy, I would have done a lot of speed reading . . .impossible with an audio book. I was disappointed because I enjoyed The Lions Game so much. Give it a try if you love John Corey and want a long book for your credit!

Repeat performance

I looked forward to this story especially Scott Brick who does a wonderful job of narriation. It was just to much like the others in this series. I believe the time has come for me to spend my credits listening to other adventures.
