Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

Good, but not believable.

A little more common sense would make it so much better. The nuclear holocaust but let's not call anyone and solve it our selves is too much.

Great listen

I find DeMille’s books to be interesting, well written, and fun. Especially when Scott Brick is the reader ( suoer fan here). Its a long book which I love. You’ll like this.

Night Fall was so great I think I had high expectations, I can't help but to feel a little disappointed. The story, although built on an interesting idea, just doesn't have the tensity and spark.
If your going to get the book go abridged, and I usually never say that, but this time, go abridged.

Riveting, Exciting and hard to put down

Well, it's John Corey, our favorite wise cracking detective.

This time instead of battling foreign terrorists, he finds a villain much closer to home. It's not a typical terrorist, one that you easily hate and want to kill, but someone who is actually charismatic and somewhat likable. This presents Corey with a problem, on one level he actually likes the guy, on the other, he's an insane idiot. When it comes to Patriotism and dedication, I think Corey sees a bit of himself in this guy and that idea forces John to take a closer look at himself.

The story itself is based on many truths, so its not that far fetched and while the some reviewers have suggested that the billionaire-reshaping-the-world is a bit cliche, I think we only need to look as far as Osama Bin Laden to see that it isn't!

The story was gripping, many surprises, people die unexpectedly and we're kept guessing. The tension built very nicely and when story peaked, unlike DeMille's previous book Night Fall, this one actually delivered a worthy, very satisfying conclusion.

The only negative comments I have, are regarding Kate Mayfield - Corey's wife. She was kinda of a whiner throughout, looking for the easy way out, always wanting to quit. Not exactly the traits you'd like to see in an FBI agent. But when the time came, she stepped up.

I look forward to John's next adventure.

After this John Corey novel, it's time for a break

I've enjoyed all the books in the John Corey series, and as I'm sure I've said before, Scott Brick is absolutely pitch perfect for these books. The premise of the book is super intriguing and so I was hooked and looking forward to a great read from the early chapters. I have to say, it's a bit disappointing after that. For one, the great premise kind of falls by the wayside and instead it's a lot of unnecessary and tedious detail about Corey doing his macho man thing, and, you know, it's really all about Corey. And, alas, whereas in previous books I've enjoyed Corey's sarcastic wit, by this book I just got plain tired of his attitude and sometimes downright juvenile behavior.

I'll return to the series though, I'm sure.

Chillingly entertaining

I work in law enforcement and I found this book chillingly believable. I loved the chracters and found myself chuckling throughout the whole book. I had a hard time turning off my ipod to go to work and other mundane things, like eating and sleeping.
