Publisher's Summary

Ten excited co-workers arrive at the beautiful Avondale Resort on a remote island in the middle of the Caribbean, having been told that they are being rewarded for their hard work and productivity. But their relaxing tropical getaway soon turns into a murderous nightmare.

After an extravagant first night dinner, the guests retire to their lavish suites only to be awakened by an ear-splitting bang. They rush to the smoking parlor to find Jordan, the company’s intern, dead - a massive hole in his chest. Giles, the consummate English butler who seems to be in charge, announces that they must solve the crime or be the next victim.

The killer, who has booby-trapped the island and cut off phone and Internet connections, is hiding among them. Is it the HR representative with a penchant for Bloody Marys, the twenty-two-year-old claims processor with the purity ring, or perhaps the head chef of the company cafeteria? The killer plays with their minds, inviting them to explore the beautiful resort, from the infinity pool with the high dive to the white sand beach complete with jet skis and snorkel gear.

Anthony E. Zuiker is the creator and executive producer of the CSI franchise, which includes CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, and CSI: NY. His mystery reality show, Whodunnit?, is his first foray into unscripted television. He lives in Los Angeles with his three children and his wife, Michelle.

Whodunnit? Murder on Mystery Island is performed by the show's host/butler, accomplished narrator Gildart Jackson.

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!

"Surprisingly good for a free listen!"

STORY (murder mystery) - Giles, a butler, reluctantly must host a murder mystery game on a small Caribbean island. There are 10 co-workers who have been "rewarded" by being trapped for a week at the luxury resort where Giles works. Someone is killed each day, and the survivors must compete with each other to solve each murder. They are allowed to visit either the murder scene, the morgue or the last place the deceased was seen alive. Some work alone, and others are trusting enough to form alliances. The winner may rest assured he has been spared from becoming the next victim.

The book is short (about 6 hours) and moves quickly. Since there are multiple murders, the riddles and clues are not very detailed. The murders are pretty grotesque, but the author moves quickly to the participants trying to solve the murder and doesn't dwell on the gory details. I'm pretty squeamish, and I was okay listening to this book. The murderer is revealed in the end, and the book comes to a satisfactory conclusion.

PERFORMANCE - The narrator had an awesome "butler voice." It was very low with an English accent, and pompous enough to sound like the butlers you see on TV. He made a pretty good attempt at giving the characters different voices and even did a halfway decent teenaged girl.

OVERALL - (actual rating 3.5) Can't go wrong with this freebie. There's another called Murder in Mystery Manor, which I plan to hear as well. There's no cursing and only slight references to sex, but you must be prepared for some brief grisly descriptions. It's definitely not a high-quality listen, but I still found it entertaining. Check it out.

Avid Audio Book listener. Usual suspects are Leadership, Business, Philosophy, Biographies, and Random Fiction. But once every couple of months I choose a book I might not have picked...ever...but with good reviews.

"A little transparent but still a fun story"

Really enjoying the Whodunnit series so far. Especially it combined with the TV show. This book keeps with the solid history of the two for a good mystery with solid characters brought together by Gildart Jackson's excellent performance.

Lets begin with Gildart Jackson. His performance, in book and TV form, really brings the story together. He is the central figure in the world and seems to have moved from third party to active participant as he is realizing his bad luck is inescapable. He never relishes in his role as primary puppet but he does work towards cutting the strings and making it his own. A bit like Watson telling the story for Sherlock.

Beyond that, the story he is given has pretty good characters and puzzles to solve. There are two minor week points in this story that isn't necessarily negative but does prevent a 5 star rating.

First, the killer unlike the first book and TV show, was a little more obvious I found. Even though I found myself not really thinking about the killer through most of the book, he or she was easier to pick out. The person with the highest chance of winning quickly became obvious too which was also disappointing even though it did create a desire to pull for an underdog(s) and keep reading hoping my underdog was part of a twist.

Second, the rule breaking. Part of what holds the series together previously is the following of the rules and consequences. While the story has nice twists but when the game is afoot, the game should be played. It felt this story, partially by its location, was a little too free with the rules by the end even though the beginning starts strong. Part of that falls on the fault of the killers overreaction/lack of patiences.

Yet these are minor gripes in the overall story which is easy to be lost in especially for the people who like solving the puzzles along with the characters. The world feels alive and characters feel real. The idea of business retreat with characters familiar yet not was actually a creative setup. It is the most familiar yet unfamiliar environment working in a large corporate environment and opened up some fun scenarios and instant teams that the first book and TV show had to flush out.

Overall, this book was a fun murder mystery. Outside of my few little plot points, you will find every mystery a chance to figure out howdoneit and you will enjoy the same guessing game as the previous novel and TV show.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would have appreciated some motive for the murders.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'll probably return to the In Death series.

What about Gildart Jackson’s performance did you like?

    The crisp, sonorous tone.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Under no circumstances.

    Any additional comments?

I kept listening, hoping something would "click" -- some inkling of why this elaborate set-up was created & why these apparently random people were killed. Never happened.

I want to feel good when I complete a story & am a little harsh on depressing ones. There are a few sad ones that I love but not many.

Short and easy story to listen to. It is not a literary great but was an entertaining way to pass some time. I would listen to another one by Zuiker and Jackson did a good job telling the story.

"Not as good as the first"
Would you try another book from Anthony E. Zuiker and/or Gildart Jackson?

Yes, because I did enjoy the first book and the tv show.

What was most disappointing about Anthony E. Zuiker’s story?

It was so predictable if you had read the first and watched the show. Of course the murderer is who it turns out to be. It also felt rushed. Many things were glossed over and summarized.

What would have made Whodunnit?: Murder on Mystery Island better?

The Christian is the bad guy?!

Would you ever listen to anything by Anthony E. Zuiker again?

    no

How did the narrator detract from the book?

If the narrator wanted to make each character's voice distinct, he should have made notes. He got voices mixed up. And he just sounds stupid trying to sound feminine.

    "Death in the Caribbean....so sad."
Would you try another book from Anthony E. Zuiker and/or Gildart Jackson?

No for Anthony E. Zuiker if it was from the same series. I mean really....how many times can the same butler be antagonized (or "cursed") by the same plot line involving clue dropping psychopaths? Yes for Gildart Jackson as he has impeccable timing and a great voice.

Has Whodunnit?: Murder on Mystery Island turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not the genre, but yes from the author. The first chapter of the book kept referencing other books, which I was not going to read. The main character was not well described and none of the things "normal" people in crisis would do were done. For example, why would everyone just go back to bed each night and wait for the killer? They would try to change the rules, blame the butler, etc.

Which character – as performed by Gildart Jackson – was your favorite?

Unfortunately, I did not get to bond with any of the characters. When I started to like one particularly, they would die.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The mystery was well thought out and I did not guess the killer's identity until the end.

    Any additional comments?

It was good for the price - free! Thank you Audible.com for that!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to a friend, but suggest they only read after a signficant period of time if they had read previous books in the series.

Had a hard time listening in the beginning, but was pleasantly surprised to find it very interesting as time went on. Great to pass the time, no bad language... no steamy scenes. Good choice for a fun listen.
