Publisher's summary

Past and present collide in Preston and Child's most thrilling novel ever....

Special Agent Pendergast arrives at an exclusive Colorado ski resort to rescue his protégée, Corrie Swanson, from serious trouble with the law. His sudden appearance coincides with the first attack of a murderous arsonist who - with brutal precision - begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. After springing Corrie from jail, Pendergast learns she made a discovery while examining the bones of several miners who were killed 150 years earlier by a rogue grizzly bear. Her finding is so astonishing that it, even more than the arsonist, threatens the resort's very existence.

Drawn deeper into the investigation, Pendergast uncovers a mysterious connection between the dead miners and a fabled, long-lost Sherlock Holmes story - one that might just offer the key to the modern day killings as well.

Now, with the ski resort snowed in and under savage attack - and Corrie's life suddenly in grave danger - Pendergast must solve the enigma of the past before the town of the present goes up in flames.

Critic reviews

“Narrator René Auberjonois is perfection as he portrays the rip-roaring assortment of Preston and Child's over-the-top characters... Auberjonois's cool persona is ideal for the black-suited mystery-man Pendergast. As Corrie, he's a hard-headed 20-something who won't be bullied. A sadistic serial arsonist, a beleaguered sheriff, wizened miners, and 'old money' interests give Auberjonois plenty of opportunities to dazzle.” (AudioFile Magazine)

"Sherlock Holmes fans will relish Preston and Child's 13th novel featuring eccentric FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast (after 2012's Two Graves), one of their best in this popular series...easily stands on its own with only passing references to Pendergast's complex backstory." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"Another highly entertaining and genuinely thrilling story from Preston & Child starring their romantic, faintly gothic, and always mysterious FBI agent, Aloysius Pendergast. As always the prose is elegant, replete with exquisite descriptions, and this time we're treated to dashes of historic characters Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde, as well as a positively delicious serving of the great Sherlock Holmes. Through myriad shocks, surprises, twists and turns, the suspense never lets up. Great fun to the last page." (Anne Rice)

Is this a set up for a series of books with Corrie

Any additional comments?

I found much of this story enjoyable. Pendergast was his usual brilliant self, the story includes a very creative (at least I think so) Sherlock Holmes interlude, and the action was significant and in good measure. The only real drawback was the continued use of Corrie a very weak undependable character. Young and brash is fine but so self centered and quite dense, I find it hard to understand why Pendergast would put so much belief in her, it just doesnt compute. I really felt like this character is being set up to have their own series (does one of these writers have a daughter who wants to do a spin off or something??) Anyway Corrie is very predictable, 2 dimensional and hopefully sidelined in the future.

ALL ON POINT!

As usual...great storytelling. Corey irked my nerve a bit and was glad that she knew she was being ungrateful.

This is a gripping story and a masterful performance from start to finish. One of my favorite Agent Pendergast mysteries.

Became one with my iPod

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy the very Southern, very strange, very mysterious and intelligent detective Agent Pendergast who is like a modern Sherlock Holmes. The authors also write very well, and it is a pleasure to listen to a literary read. The book is read very well - the Audible version is done so well it's better to hear it than read it. My iPod and I became one as I dragged it everywhere, my earphones dangling out of one ear if driving, two if walking -- I could not put this down. The writers are really on top of their game in this book.

What did you like best about this story?

The Colorado mining history, the growth of Cory and her relationships, the character of Pendergast, and the clever introduction of Sherlockiana.

Which scene was your favorite?

Many of them, but the portrayal of Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde was very fun.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I became addicted.

Any additional comments?

I am so sorry I finished it -- I wanted it to never end!

I'm never disappointed.

I loved this book. As with all of the stories with Agent Pendergast I'm them, I am never disappointed. They hold me spell bound until the very end. Which, I might add, turned out much better than I had feared it would. Thanks Gentlemen for a wonderful read.
