Publisher's summary

Sally O'Malley made a promise to her daddy before he died. She swore she'd look after her sister, Troo. Keep her safe. But like her Granny always said, actions speak louder than words. And Sally would have to agree with her. Because during the summer of 1959, the girls' mother is hospitalized, their stepfather has abandoned them for a six pack, and their big sister, Nell, who was left strict instructions to take care of them, is too busy making out with her boyfriend to notice that Sally and Troo are on the loose. And so is a murderer and molester. Highly imaginative Sally is pretty sure of two things. Who the killer is. And that she's next on his list. If nobody will believe her, she has no choice but to protect herself and Troo as best she can, relying on her own courage and the kindness of her neighbors.

REMEMBER

For all who remember playing in the neighborhood until the fireflies went to sleep...this book is for you. The story is both poignant and entreaties. The narration is top notch....You won't want Sky King....Roger and Out to ever come.....

Love it!

Great story, characters, and narrator. Perfectly relatable. The heavy subject matter combined with the innocent and unintentionally funny little girl perspective was beautiful.

I love this book

This book brought back a lot of memories of vacations days in Wisconsin. It made me laugh and cry. Very heartwarming and a story of forgiveness as well.

Loved it

Loved the sayings and references to another time. I remember as a child not understanding the sayings of my parents and grandmothers. Some of the childish misinterpretations of the children made me laugh out loud. Good story and good performance

All the good feelings!

I absolutely loved this book. The approach is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, delightfully honest (from the mouth of babes), and really funny. A very enjoyable read.

Very odd story

Not much of a mystery, no suspense but the characters were well done by the author. Unfortunately the story line and plot were somewhat vacant. There was some humor from the sisters and I guess this was the best part. Save your money unless you have a heart condition and don’t want to be surprised by anything in this book.

A story from a child’s perspective

This is an interesting story told from a child as to what her life was all about. It’s very interesting and brings back so many memories in life that are forgotten. I had forgotten how as a child smells play such an import role in identifying people. How a child has to maneuver growing up in an adult world. How things look from a child’s point of view. How imagination is key to a child’s journey. It’s getting into a child’s mind and seeing life from there. An interesting read.

So nostalgic

Best book I’ve read in a long time! Amazing interpretation of child’s viewpoint and so sweet and nostalgic. I laughed out loud so many times and couldn’t stop smiling.

Entertaining! I didn’t want to stop listening!

I loved listening to this audio book. I struggle focusing with the words on a page. Comprehension & concentrating on an actual book of any kind isn’t a strength I’ve been blessed with. I have a LD and that makes it hard to retain what I read. So Audio books allows me to use my imagination and appreciate the actual story. I’m no expert or a book club member or some fancy, knowledgeable critic, so reviewing isn’t something I do often. What I do know is that I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. The characters were wonderfully portrayed and I could see them in my mind. I really enjoyed the adventures & the plot twists this story provided! It’s a challenge keeping my attention. But this story had me eager to listen the second I had time & as I did my daily chores & whatnot. I’m a bit of a loner, a recluse. I don’t have much in the way of friends. So this allows me to experience human interactions in my mind. Some I thoroughly enjoyed & some I don’t ever care to experience. The tone in which these moments were presented by the narrator/author were wonderfully portrayed in the gentleness, the sternness & the fear with the rise and fall of her voice. The excitement, sad & happy tears and the horrors of the shocking moments are captured so well that I felt like I was there experiencing them with the characters. Thank you for this wonderful adventure. Being afforded the opportunity to live outside these walls means a whole bunch to a person like me. Even if ours just within the walls of my mind. Simply put, it doesn’t feel so lonely. I look forward to hearing more stories by this author. Give it a listen!
