#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In the late summer of a long-ago year, Alton Turner Blackwood brutally murdered four families. His savage spree ended only when he himself was killed by the last survivor of the last family, a fourteen-year-old boy.

Half a continent away and two decades later, someone is murdering families again, re-creating in detail Blackwood’s crimes. Homicide detective John Calvino is certain that his own family - his wife and three children - will be targets, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer.

As a detective, John is a man of reason who deals in cold facts. But an extraordinary experience convinces him that sometimes death is not a one-way journey, that sometimes the dead return.

Disturbing

This was fascinatingly disturbing. A great tale from Dean Koontz and a well read narration by Steven Weber.

Predictable

I love Dean Koontz books. In fact, they're the only ones on which I spend money. however, the storyline in this book could have been written by a Dean Koontz copy cat. there was the typical mystical evil, the benevolent and helpful dog, an unsuspecting but blessed since birth protagonist, can multiple storylines coming together. nothing new or exciting. probably a good book if you haven't read a whole bunch of Dean Koontz books already. a good way to ease into his storytelling methods.

Excellent thriller by Dean Koontz

This was a bit hard to listen to at times. I usually read anything by Dean Koontz. This is my first Audible by him. The narrator was excellent. Thank goodness the good guys usually win in his books. It was very difficult to listen to at times, but it was really good entertainment.

Interesting book.

I wanted to know more about Alton Blackwood. Other than that the book was an up and down interest book. Ending was not a strong one, but Koontz does not know how to end a book. Read with trepidation.

Always a twist and a turn or two. Keeps you hanging until the end .

Not my favorite but enjoyable

After a huge build up with the protagonist and his family, the resolution was a bit anticlimactic. The unique characters, especially the specialists he consulted, were nice. The development of the children including their inner monologues was good but again, their plot lines were not as cohesive as Koontz other stories.
The narrator read well enough but it is so much more effective to the plot when they are able to use some mild differences in their inflection when reading as different characters.

Very scary entertaining read

I was a little wary of this book as there are so many negative reviews that say this is formulaic and flat. I beg to differ! I found this a great read. It's classic Dean Koontz but I like that. Despite the similarities in the character's basic lives, the plot is original and innovative I think. It's seriously spooky. The narrator Steven Weber does a fantastic job of interpreting the story. His voices were very discernible. I loved his very creepy portrayal of the villain and his voices for the children were very entertaining. I say if you're looking for a good read/listen then you won't go wrong with this book.

What the Night Knows, by Dean Koontz

This book kept me on the edge of my pillow for two nights straight!! I couldn't stop listenening to/drooling over Steven Weber's marvelously seductive voice so delicately describing the horrendously delicious horror that Koontz has once again conjured, and the sultry sorrow that lingered with each exhale. The stratigraphic insight of the scenes, the courage of the chasmal characters, and the mortifyingly malignant manifestations left me leering at the last leaf, envying an endless eden that is Dean Koontz. Now...sleep.

Wow!

OK folks who disagree - suspend your need for reality and just go with it! One of the best Koontz books I have heard in a long, long time!
