Publisher's summary

In the entire canon of tough-girl sleuths, gumshoes, PIs, detectives, and investigators, there's no one quite like Fritillary Quilter. A New York arson investigator, a sassy, fresh spirit with a nose for arson and an eye for dubious burn patterns, "Tilly" pushes the envelope of the traditional female investigator with a young, hip outlook and indefatigable zeal.

Weeping is an arson investigator's term and also the usual state that befalls a fire's grief-stricken survivors. So it's with some surprise and suspicion that Tilly meets the seemingly unconcerned Faith Browning, whose sister Dorsey has just burned to death in their family home. When Faith puts in a quick claim without giving the insurance company a chance to look around, the company calls Tilly. Tilly teams up with the arson pro Isaak "Ike" Blessing, and together they must sift through the ashes to find the truth.

Written by a real-life private eye and fire investigator, Weeping is fueled by technical authority, lively characters, and stylish prose.

Weeping-OK

Well, I liked the idea (fire investigators) and the characters and the interactions between the two main characters. It is just that it was a first book (in a series?) and so there was a lot of introductory "setting the stage" kind of stuff that made the book a little slow. I will try the next one and hope it moves along better. In general, it was ok.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this, and will keep an eye out for further titles by this author. I think she'll improve over time, but in this one she interested me in fires enough to do a google images search for the various types of fire marks mentioned in the story- weeping, alligatoring and so on. I also enjoyed some of the cameos of minor charactors- the couple who're well insured but so callous she resents paying out to, for instance.

GREAT!

HIGHLY recommended! as another person wrote-"what a fun read"! i laughed out loud many times. the narrator was great-not just reading the written word, but was like the person was sitting there, telling you the actual events. the subject of fire investigation was really interesting too-very eye-opening.
the writing is easy going-yes, there is some setting up of events. but again, with the narrator so interesting, it's a delightful journey; all the way to the end.i was hoping there were more of this series in audible. will try all of this author and narrator combo books.

Wish there were 30 books about this character!

What made the experience of listening to Weeping the most enjoyable?

Anna Fields. Period. Other than the Dresden Files reader James Marsters - who I love - Anna Fields is by far my second favorite reader of all the audio books I've listened to - and I listen to 1 - 3 audiobooks a week.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fritillary Quilter... I want to have lunch with her once a week.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Very thankful I stumbled on Anna Fields by way of Kate Whilhem's books. In searching out other books read by her, I found this one and loved it and the Nightengale/Bly series by Shelley Rueben.

great beginning

This was a compelling audio book, and I listen while doing finish work and so it has to be compelling enough for me to pay attention! There was a lot of groundwork so that you could actually understand the workings of fire investigation, which I would compelling, but others have bemoaned. If i follow this character (and i will) then I want to understand why THEY are so good. Great visual novel! Love the character Tilly, and -sigh- Anna Fields did her well,RIP. I want to say mroe but do not want to spoil -- buy and enjoy!

No Weeping Here

If you could sum up Weeping in three words, what would they be?

I want more.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I loved the relationship between Tilly and Ike. I wanted to hear more of the story and I often stayed in my car to listen when I arrived at my destination.

What about Anna Fields’s performance did you like?

I LOVED Anna Fields. I could listen to her read all day. You would never know that one person is voicing all those characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Intelligent wit. It made me laugh.

Any additional comments?

Looking for more in the series. Found book #2, but are Ike and Tilly in it?

Great!

What a fun listen! Took me through several hours of holiday baking- I didn't want to stop. Characters are interesting and while the mystery aspect is predictable, still a good story. Easy, enjoyable listen.

More!

This was a most enjoyable listen. The reader was fantastic, and the story was engrossing. The dialogue was often hilarious - I frequently thought "I wish I had said that!"

Highly recommended.

Weeping

This is one of the worst books I have listened to in a long time. If you want to learn how to write mystery novels, listen to this book, and then do the opposite. The author apparently never heard of the "show, don't tell" school of plotting because she just tells you what happens and then summarizes it. Actually, although I listened to this only a week ago, I can't even remember all the plot, it was that bad. It's a short novel, but it seemed to go on forever.
