Publisher's summary

From domestic war to barroom brawls, grad-student-turned-PI Neal Carey’s got more than studying on his plate.

Neal’s three-year confinement in a Chinese monastery is finally over—but his troubles are just beginning. The elusive financial benefactors who have bought his freedom expect a return on their investment. They want him to find Cody McCall, a two-year-old boy recently abducted by his father in a bitter Hollywood custody battle—a task that will propel Neal from the glittering Hollywood hills to the remote wilds of Nevada.

To find Cody, Neal has to turn outlaw in a land of two-bit casinos and roadside cathouses to infiltrate a vicious white supremacist group spouting hatred and dealing in terror. But the deeper undercover he goes, the deadlier the game becomes. Now Neal must force a showdown with the group’s crazed leader and find Cody before the missing toddler ends up lost in a world of unspeakable evil.

Crack another case with Neal Carey.

Don Winslow is just plane awesome

Neal Carrey is one of my favorite series …this third book was excellent. I’m on to book 4 and five now before I read Winslow’s big epic novel that he just released (city on fire)

Way down on the high lonely will not disappoint you …get it

I love this series...

I love the high highs and the low lows. I love the grit and the grins. I love the characters and the narration. This is pure entertainment and fascinating material. Winslow does due diligence when it comes to his homework, and it pays off in spades. Highly recommend all his books in this series, but be forewarned: this is graphic and violent stuff.

Violent and gruesome

After listening to the delightful and hilarious While Drowning in the Desert, we had good expectations for another Don Winslow/Joe Barrett match up. Unfortunately, this one should have had warning labels for torture and gruesome murder. We were not expecting the explicit recounting of really terrible torture scenes and viciousness of a group of neo-Nazi types. Maybe it would have been different if we had been prepared. So this is your warning. Otherwise, Winslow sucks you in deeper and deeper into a missing child case, a toddler abducted by the non-custodial parent. Neal Carey, reluctant private investigator, goes deep undercover to try to locate and safely extract the toddler. He meets up with interesting characters along the way, both decent and evil, and of course Joe Graham, his foster father, plays a pivotal role. I love that crusty guy! There’s lots of action, shoot outs, ambushes, captivity, torture, murder, sabotage, and even some romance. Winslow sure knows how to tell a story. This one went on a bit too long for my tastes, and I was ready for the fight scenes to finally conclude so the book could end. I’m giving it 3* for the story but 5* for the very talented Joe Barrett narration.

Winslow Back in Fighting Form!

After the disappointment of the awfully befuddled (and tedious) Buddha's Mirror, Don Winslow (and Neal Carey) come back with a white knuckle thriller, that rockets to a dazzler of an ending. Job well done -- I couldn't put it down!

The best one so far

I thought the first one was decent enough, but the second one really dragged. This one had a much better pace and an element of suspense that the other two lacked. The characters that you’ve come to know already are by now three dimensional and endearing, and the new characters are interesting enough. This would have been a good ending to the series, but I’m interested to see where they go with the next two

Neal Carey Series review

Relatively speaking about this series – just another one of Winslow’s complicated, sometimes terrifying, sometimes witty , always entertaining tales.
