A cold case reopened - and a murderer reemerging more deadly than ever before
Baltimore homicide detective Stevie Mazzetti has suffered losses no woman should have to endure. And, despite it all, she's still a fighter. When she learns that her ex-partner might have miscarried justice, she's determined to put the past to rights, even when she becomes a target.
It's former marine Clay Maynard's job to see the risk in every situation, and he doesn't have to look hard to find the danger surrounding Stevie. Since the minute he first saw her, Clay has wanted toprotect the wounded officer, and he started loving her not long after that. So when Stevie attracts the attention of a vicious psychopath, Clay will do whatever it takes to keep her alive. That is, if he can stay ahead of a killer with everything to lose - and something terrifying to hide.

This one is right up there with all of Karen Rose's other books.
Karen Rose writes mystery/thrillers with a little bit of romance. I am almost always on the edge of my seat as there are usually quite a few homocides and you're never sure who's going to get shot, murdered or slashed before someone's rage comes to an end.
I highly recommend this new book. If you are already a Karen Rose fan then you will not be disappointed. I think this one is better then her last.. If you've never heard any of her books it's nice to listen in order however each one can be read/listened to as a stand alone. Her books are great an certainly worth a credit.
I liked the story. it did carry on a bit too long. I was getting tired of it because the ending became so very obvious three-quarters of the way through.
the biggest problem for me was the detailed sex scenes. it wasn't necessary for the plot and we're thrown in just for shock or voyeuristic means. it's a bummer that I couldn't know about it ahead of my purchase.
Listen mostly to urban fantasy and suspense/thrillers but also enjoy mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, classic, modern, spiritual or general literature. And I always like a bit of romance in any of my stories.
A solid book with a well paced story, strong characters, good suspense, and a heated romance. My only real complaint was that I struggled a bit with the motivation for the villain. It just seemed like he kept at it to the point that he was calling attention to himself, which was the exact thing he was trying to stop. Finally decided to just go with it but don't usually have that problem with Ms Rose's books. I'm a huge fan of Marguerite Gavin so if you've enjoyed her performances in the past you won't be disappointed with this one. If you don't care for her style you probably won't care for this either.
The narrator was amazing and the story was very unique and interesting other than when the author slipped into romance novel mode. I bought the book as a mystery/thriller and the romance between the characters was better developed than in other books so initially I didn't mind, but by mid-way into the book I had to fast forward through more graphic sex scenes than I can count and it took away from the overall sophistication of the story and narration. I listen to audiobooks at work and this one would have been really problematic if my headphones had cut out and it started playing when the male character's "cock" was being discussed for the umpteenth time or he was inserting something into the main character's "slit". Even when I fast forwarded to the next chapter it was still going on. If you are looking for some literary soft core porn within an excellent mystery, this book is for you.
The narrator ruined this for me. At times she seemed to go so fast I felt like I was listening to the Chipmunks. Her men's voices all sounded like John Wayne and were drawled out. I kept waiting for a sentence to end in "little lady" John Wayne style. The child in the book often sounded mentally challenged or slow.
The story was pretty good although I just finished another book by this author and saw a cookie cutter pattern in the main characters.
narrator can't do cordelia's voice, she sounded like an old lady
Heroine has too much angst, she's not a likable character.
A wife, mother, and grandmother, I am a retired educator and counselor who is starting to write my own. I love listening as I work & hobby.
It is a very well woven together narrative with appropriate twists and turns that enhance the suspense. The characters are well developed and the relationship is paced well. The descriptions make the story live and the conflicts real. It is very admirable how the author was able to weave so many characters together.
When Clay and Stevie finally get together. The depth of his love for her is so potent and exciting.
Clay was my favorite... with Stevie a very close second.
It made me laugh and cry. It was captivating and engrossing but provided the ability to just "live" with it and within it. I was so pleased to find a suspenseful mystery that moved in a deliberate manner and did not include a great deal of errotica but did have romance and love.
The biggest problem I had with the book was trying to keep the characters straight and keep up with all the names and relationships as well as how they fit together. This is often the problem with listening to books rather than reading since one cannot just flip the pages back to clarify something or someone. There were so many characters in the book but the author wove them together in a way that the storyline came together well.
This was a great book. First Karen Rose book I have read/listened to and it keep me in it's grip from start to finish. One thing I really liked was the way Ms Rose completed the story, even after all the drama was finished. Marguerite Gavin did an excellent job differentiating one character from another. I am going to see what other books I can find by this author.
I am about 3 hours into this book and i do not like this Stevie woman; she is a female brute; unkind, selfish and a know-it-all who actually knows nothing ... so far .... i'm hanging in for her daughter and i want to see how it all turns out ... it seems kinda long for the type of book it is. Pillars of the Earth, Lonesome Dove and Gone With the Wind are EPIC novels which deserve long hours .... this one? Not sure if it deserves 1/2 the time ..... i'll keep going, ... i may be glad when/if she dies .... i'll keep going for that possibility!
