Regarding the narrator...

After reading other reviews, I decided to listen to this with the speed of 1.15. that made a significant difference. narration that was plodding at 1.00, had a nice cadence at 1.15. Other than that I found the mystery of this Amanda Quick novel to be interesting.

Overdramatic much?

The story was okay. Predictable. Often frustrating with the stupidity of the heroine. Sad in the hero not protecting the heroine’s virtue, instead, taking her in a dingy old room and then pretending surprise and scolding her for being a virgin. How could he not know; she wasn’t a widow, lived with her aunts, and acted ridiculously innocent the whole time.

But the worst was the reader. Everything the hero, and men in general, said was with great force, like he was perpetually making a point. No subtlety, no humor. Everything. Was such. A big. Deal. I tried talking like that with my kids and they laughed me out of the room. Little buggers.

I finished it, but cannot recommend.

Classic Amanda Quick

Setting: London, England Late Victorian period
Genre: Romance/Mystery
Caroline Fordyce is the author of sensational novels published in serial form in the newspaper. But she is a woman with a scandal in her past. Adam Hardesty confronts Caroline, thinking she was somehow involved with the murder of a psychic medium and the theft of a diary that holds many of the secrets of his life. They decide to join forces to look for the diary and find out who killed the psychic.
I have to say that I really did not like Caroline for about the first 1/3 - 1/2 of the novel. She is insecure and strident. Adam is pretty one dimensional as well. The plot is interesting - at least average.
Louisa Jane Underwood, while not my least favorite reader, still doesn’t land in the top 10. There isn’t quite enough differentiation among the characters. However, she does a good job with the male voice.
Overall, this was an okay listen.

Read the book skip the audio

I have read this book and liked it so much I thought it would be a good listen. Boy was I wrong! The voices, both male and female, are just awful. I could only get about half way through before becoming so irritated I quit.

Another hit by Amanda Quick.

Admittedly many of Amanda Quicks books are similar, I have been a fan since I was younger. This one was a good one. It was fun when he got disgruntled about being described as the villain. The narrator made it a bit harder to get into the story.
