"Sophie McKenzie follows her bestselling first novel for adults, Close My Eyes, with another gripping psychological thriller"
"Already a well-established author of young adult fiction, Sophie McKenzie’s first novel for adults, Close My Eyes was met with critical acclaim and became a bestseller"
"Close My Eyes is so emotionally engaging I was in tears by the end of the first chapter… keeps you turning pages until the final dramatic twist." (Penny Hancock)
"You will race through this fast-moving thriller that saves the most shocking twist until the very end" (Sunday Mirror)
I have listened to Clare Corbett read other books and have enjoyed her narration, but not in this one.
No, because the story is improbable and over dramatic and these aspects are worsened by the histrionic reading by Clare Corbett. She became to me becomes increasingly irritating and makes the story all the more unbelievable.
Perhaps someone like Beth Chalmers would improve the credibility of the story.
Rather than cutting out particular scenes, it would be preferable to reduce the highly coloured action and events that constantly occur and cut out the improbable and constant over reactions of the heroine.
The narrator was great, her children's and men's voices were convincing. I enjoyed the story and found it easy to follow.
"Gripped from beginning to end"
Despite other reviews I took a chance and purchased this book as the 4th one by the author! I loved it! So easy to listen too, at first I thought the bland tone would drive me crazy but it did not, the accents were excellent and the different voices were also good and added to the interest of the overall story. A great audio!
"you will be on the edge of your seat to the end"
few books have kept me so enthralled and unsure of who the baddy is until the very end of the book. Each chapter I changed my mind. Beautifully read as well
This book kept me on the edge of my seat listening to it. I couldn't switch it off.
Parts of the book amused me. Other parts had me on edge.
Brilliantly written book.
"All highly improbable, but v enjoyable nonetheless"
Enjoyed this book. A plot with lots of twists and some nail-biting situations. Yes, it has elements of improbability as many thrillers do - in particular, why didn't she just go to the police? However it was well written with (mostly) believable characters and I found it a real page turner. The narrator was great and handled the child and male voices really well (not always the case). From a personal point of view I enjoyed that the story was set in Exeter and other parts of the West Country - Bridport, Honiton, Salisbury, Bath - which makes a refreshing change.
I couldn't stop listening to this book. A gripping and most thrilling story from beginning to end. Well constructed and highly recommended.
"A real page turner"
If you love psychological thrillers this is for you. There were lots of twists and turns and I didn't see a lot of them coming. Well written but not my favourite reader.
"Didn't need other point of view"
Excellent story spoilt by alternative voice. It didn't need it. Otherwise great listen, characterful narrator.
Brilliant author can't wait to read more of her.
Brilliant performance yet again by Claire Corbett..my favourite narrator.
A whole host of rich and believable characters are brought to life by the expert narration.
A completely intriguing and complex tale of deceit within and around a variety of relations. Several "suspects" keep you guessing until the last couple of chapters.
Well worth a listen.
