Except for one - the coffin ship Charon. She plays host to an appalling complement of misfits and is captained by Edward Trapp - professional scoundrel, international pariah, blackguard without merit. To Trapp, war offers a prime commercial opportunity. How else might a treasure-seeker convinced of his own immortality manipulate the Allies into providing a whole task force of warships to escort him north through U-boat Alley to the very edge of the Arctic ice barrier...and beyond?

"A remarkable gem of a book"
The story is narrated with style and panache, the writing is pure magic. It really is like listening to a story from a chap sitting next to you in a bar. Its natural, has its own little misdirection’s, not intentional in pure narration, but the sort of misunderstanding you get when you do listen to a chap telling a story. The characters are so real. No heroes and no real villains either. Just a great story. I have listened to hundreds of books as I am an original 2002 audible .COM customer and this is defiantly one of the best. Great story, great writing and excellent narration. Perhaps the narration is also the best I have experienced.
"josephwneill is right you know."
I bought this audiobook on the strength of josephwneill’s review. I’ve never read any of the author’s books before, and it’s not really the sort of thing I normally listen to or read. But I’m very glad I did.
The narration is first class. It’s hard to believe this book wasn’t written just to be an audiobook. Enjoyed every minute of it swinging between chuckling out loud at the humour of the characters and plot, and being chilled to the bone by the landscape and setting of the story.
