Publisher's summary

A voice from beyond the grave?

College students Kenji and Dylan stumble upon a strange recording in the background of an obscure song. It's a woman's voice uttering a string of seemingly random characters. Upon further inspection, the song appears to have been embedded with a hidden message. Attempting to crack the mysterious code and becoming obsessed with the recording, Kenji and Dylan set off in search of answers. With every turn in the road however, the puzzle only seems to grow more complicated. And sinister.

Retired Vietnam vet Reggie Cash is also drawn in by this message, and before long both he and the two college students are on the trail of the mysterious woman featured in the recording. But who is she, and where is she leading them?

As things fall into place and strange events unfold, the three of them begin to wish that they'd never heard the recording at all.

Transmission is a full-length novel of supernatural horror and suspense by Ambrose Ibsen.

Don't go into the house alone!

What did you love best about Transmission?

The performance! Jake Urry is without a doubt the best fantasy/horror performer out there. He is scintillating in this reading ( and paired with a decent genre writer in Ambrose Ibsen as well! )

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most: The recordings and how they were parsed out.

Least: Some of the personal interactions in the story are fluffy.

What about Jake Urry’s performance did you like?

Everything. Couldn't be improved upon. Fabulous work.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some parts were scary and made me think. No crying however.

Any additional comments?

I was provided this book in exchange for fair and objective review. I am VERY glad I did get the book, as it is was highly entertaining, and I most definitely would have used a credit for it if it didn't end up on my Audioblast list.

Highly recommended, if not just for the performance.

An underrated gem

This one has been in my library for a while now, but for some reason I totally forgot about listening to it until recently. Now that I have, I wish it hadn't taken so long. I have no idea why it isn't rated higher than it currently is. The story is creepy and original, and the narration is simply excellent. Ambrose Ibsen is always good for a scary tale, and of the five or six I own, this one is my favorite. I highly recommend it for those looking for supernatural horror.

I received this book for free at my request from the author, publisher or narrator, and have voluntarily left this review. This has not affected my review in the slightest however, as I wanted to listen to the book even before it was given to me, and would have eventually spent a credit on it anyway. I can say now it would have been totally worth it.

Creepy and intriguing -- sure to keep you hooked!

I love that this story wastes no time and gets right down to business. Kenji hears a weird voice in the background of his music and immediately begins puzzling over it. Dragging his friend Dylan into it, they set off on a quest to discover the meaning. Elsewhere, a man sees a woman on a VHS uttering the same phrases into the camera and is sucked into the hunt as well.

The story follows our three protagonists as they endeavor to discover how and why this woman, Agnes, imprinted her message on various media 10 years ago. It's a fun and creepy romp that kept my attention just about the whole way.

Toward the 65-70% mark however, the author apparently realizes the cat is just about to be out the bag and seems intent on dragging things out as much as possible. The listener is forced to suffer through repetitive dialog and inner-monologues over how they shouldn't be doing what they're doing and how they'll regret it. Every step of the adventure is then plagued with enough hand-wringing to completely destroy the momentum.

The ending is satisfactory, although I think things might have been creepier had the woman's true nature not been what it was. There also seemed to be no real reason for some characters or facts to have existed at all.

The narrator has an appropriately creepy voice that's well-suited to a tale of this nature. The accent, while soothing, could become a bit distracting however. I'd say the biggest drawback for me was that most of the dialog was read in a monotone. Coupling that with the accent, it sometimes made it hard to tell if you were listening to someone speak or think.

Definitely worth a listen for the first 70% of the book alone though!

Creepy!!!

This was such an awesome, creepy, different type of ghost story.

This is the story of College students, Kenji and Dylan, and a retired Vietnam vet, Reggie Cash. It starts with the boys finding a female voice uttering something in a song. It plays on their mind until they eventually get it cleaned up and realise that she is uttering coordinates. They decide to see where the coordinates lead them and take a road trip!

Meanwhile, Reggie is watching a war documentary when he seems to see the same woman in multiple places and she seems to be saying something but it's lost in the background. He goes to a friend who is able to isolate her voice and he finds the same thing as the boys did, a set of coordinates. Why did 2 very different type of people get the same message? And where will the coordinates lead them?

I loved the plot. It was creepy, suspenseful and takes a twist that I didn't see. I also loved how the author brought, not just the college boys, but a retired vet into the story. It added a little extra something to the overall feel. This would make a really great movie ;)

All the characters were well written and developed. The way the boys got their message was truly creepy because when I was young my brother used to listen to the heavy metal music, the type where the singer screams into the mic!! My nan used to tell him it was devils music and if played backwards, it would contain instructions on devil worship, or some such nonsense anyway. I was only 7 at the time and it always stayed with me, I never can listen to heavy metal music even to this day!!

Anyway, in all this was a truly creepy book and one that I devoured!! I will definitely be looking at more of this authors titles.

Jake Urry did a great job with the narration. He was incredibly creepy with the Ghost parts!!! He really knew how to read this story properly, and by that I mean that he brought the creepiness and suspenseful to life. Another narrator to add to my list!

A Different Kind of Ghost Story

Any additional comments?

I have read/listened to many ghost stories in my time (they are some of my favorite kinds of stories!) and this one sure is different. From start to finish, Ibsen puts a unique spin on your average ghost story by having a totally new trajectory. I can't say more without spoilers! If you enjoy spooky tales and are ready for something a bit different, this book is for you. I also can't help but mention that Ibsen does a fantastic job of having diverse characters in this book- thank you for that Mr. Ibsen. Jake Urry delivers flawless voice narration, as always.

Curiosity Killed the Cat

Would you try another book from Ambrose Ibsen and/or Jake Urry?

This is the second book I've had by Ambrose Ibsen, I read his House by The Sea a couple weeks previous to this one and really liked his writing style. Ambrose Ibsen writes creepy, something unworldly is out to get you kind of stories,

Would you recommend Transmission to your friends? Why or why not?

Transmission wasn't as good as House by the Sea but if you are an Ambrose Ibsen fan, put this on your list. Parts of the story I found rather unbelievable and the main characters kind of get what they deserve for being so freaking nosey.

Any additional comments?

Not Ibsen's best work but it was creepy enough and there were a couple of scenes in the second half of the book that kept me up at night.

Transmission: A Supernatural Thriller

Transmission:
Ambrose Ibsen

Two University of Wisconsin students find something strange and follow it to a creepy adventure. There is suspense and mystery and paranormal or maybe supernatural aspects to this book. The ending set up for a sequel or the listeners imagination.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Jake Urry added a good bit of creep factor.

Worth the money or credit

Very original horror story. Great narration. The only negative thing I can say is that it ends to soon. Other than that it would be five stars.
