The deep undercurrents of life in a small Southern town burst to the surface in this suspenseful tale of passion and prophecy. Sixteen-year-old Mattie comes to Jexville as a mail-order bride, and finds a quiet, deeply religious community so cautious that even dancing is frowned upon. Soon Mattie finds herself playing a part in a long-awaited, stunningly executed plan of revenge.

Rating scale: 5=Loved it, 4=Liked it, 3=Ok, 2=Disappointed, 1=Hated it. I look for well developed characters, compelling stories.
I don't usually write reviews on stories that I choose not to finish, but in this case, it's not the story but the narration that has caused me to throw in the towel. I could forgive (maybe) the failure to find a southern reader for a story infused with rural southern sensibilities, but failure to find someone who can read a story competently is a disservice to both the listener and the author. Casey Holloway reads like a kindergarten teacher working harder at pronouncing the words correctly than conveying the meaning and expression of the words. She fills her sentences with inappropriate pauses as if there were random periods breaking up every thought. Connecting with the characters is impossible with no expression to lend emotional context. Reviews on Amazon from those who read the book in print are generally favorable, suggesting a better reading than listening experience for this book. Shame on me for not checking out the sample.
Unlikely, I don't want to feel this suckered again.
It was implausible, the characters especially that bratty kid were unlikable. The ending was just inexplicable.
Meh. Whiney interpretation of main character, she made the bad guy sound like Snidely Whiplash.
Yes it ended.
Good premise that went off the rails, but I kept hoping for it to get back on track...didn't happen.
Boring and I did not connect with the characters. Not a winner in my opinion.
