Novice sheriff

In the second book of the series, Joanna Brady has won her election, and now has to face her unwelcoming colleagues. She is overwhelmed with her responsibilities, as well as the stress of being a new widow and working single mom. Sounds like real life to me. I like the fact that Joanna realizes that there is a lot she doesn't know, and is willing to admit it, and try to learn from others. But she also doesn't let others push her around!

Great Second Installment for this series

I enjoyed this second book in the Joanna Brady series even more than the first one. Joanna has now been elected sheriff and right away has two murders to solve. Very clever writing. I didn't guess the ending. I did think the narrator handled this one a little better than the previous one - especially when reading Harold's part.

Love the Arizona setting.

2nd in this series I have listen to. Enjoy the familiarity to Arizona. Will be going on to the next 1 here soon.

Another great book

J A Jance does a great job once again. Her knack for excellent writing is evident from beginning to end.

EXCELLENT SERIES!

I have truly enjoyed this series. J. A. Jance has a writing talent that locks in your full attention. It's an easy listen because the characters are so distinctly different. I'm on the fence with the narrator. The voice is pleasant enough but there's just something about her tone that I can't put my finger on that could be better. However, it doesn't stop me from moving on to the next in the series.

Reader courage

A little hard to take, especially towards the end. A very dicey subject handled very nicely. Only if one has lived the it can it truly be appreciated..

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The overall story is interesting, but the pace is too slow.

Would you be willing to try another book from J. A. Jance? Why or why not?

I picked up this series because I thoroughly enjoyed the JP Beaumont series and completely exhausted Audible's offerings in this category. So I really wanted to like this series, but this second book in the series is pacing even more slowly than the first. I'm 3 hours into the book and we still don't have a murder yet...

How could the performance have been better?

I find that the narration overall is fine, except for the voice of the daughter, which is grating on a level of fingernail-against-chalkboard. Every single line that the narrator delivers from the daughter comes out as a whine. It makes me wish the lead character would talk with her daughter about her attitude.
