What did you love best about To the Hilt?

I love almost all of Dick Francis's books but this one touched home since I am an artist and he brought the drive of art alive.

    "Excellent as usual"
What made the experience of listening to To the Hilt the most enjoyable?

The James Bond of the equine world rides again! Great storytelling by the narrator and a great story by Francis. The other great thing about Francis is you get to learn a little about another subject. In this case, painting with acrylics.

What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Further character development. The thing with excellent narrators , like Prebble, is you feel you are a part of the story as a opposed to being read a story, usually by an American who sounds angry and abrasive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

    "The Master at his best."

I started reading Dick Francis' novels about 20 years ago. Have read/listened to them all. His protagonists are most always amateur sleuths who find themselves in troublesome, hazardous situations. They are frequently amateur steeplechase jockeys -- nimble, quick witted, and courageous.

This time, howeverq, he is an artist who lives alone on a quiet mountain top until his mother calls to tell him his stepfather has had a heart attack.

I loved it. Well worth a credit.

"The best of the best ********"

I have read all of the novels by Dick Francis and give most of them 5 stars. This novel, however, is the best of the best. A tale so interesting and so enjoyable that you will find yourself laughing, crying, arguing and enraptured by the main characters. Wonderful read for a rainy day with nothing to do but enjoy.

    "One of Dick Francis' best"

This has always been one of my favorites. I bought the book when it was first published and I've listened to it frequently in audio form. In his prime, Francis' ability to describe human nature was seldom exceeded by other writers. One oddity though--this recording contains material that was missing from previous downloads. I've listened to it so often that I almost know it by heart, and there is no question in my mind that previous downloads of it from Audible were missing many sentences and phrases. I'm not sure why that would have been done, and it makes me wonder whether other Audible purchases have been similarly abridged without my knowing it.
