Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Mary Jane Clark delights listeners with her tasty new mystery To Have and to Kill

Piper Donovan never imagined that decorating wedding cakes could be so dangerous! A struggling actress with no immediate prospects and a recently broken engagement, Piper moves back in with her parents to take stock of her life. She steps tentatively into the family bakery business and finds herself agreeing to create a wedding cake for the acclaimed star of a daytime television drama. But soon someone close to the bride-to-be is horribly murdered, and it seems that that someone is ruthlessly determined to stop the wedding.

With the help of her former neighbor, Jack, a handsome FBI agent with a soft spot for the gorgeous cake-maker, Piper moves closer to the truth. And as she narrows in on a suspect, she realizes that it's hotter in the kitchen than she may be able to handle.

Enjoyed this book. It’s a really good mystery without a lot of gore. Surprise ending too.

Speechless for a headline

I feel compelled to write a review for this book. I have so many mixed feelings about it, most of them not good. First, the narrator did a very good job with the voices and emotions. But the writing of the story is a different issue. I almost asked for a refund after I was finished but just have to explain my reactions to this book on various issues.
#1. Why all the details about cooking of various foods? I understand the inclusions about the cake decorating but not the rest...they had no relevance to the story at all (the wines and the various food dishes had nothing to do with the story overall).
#2. For a fairly short book, there were way too many twists and turns in the plots and characters that is was difficult to keep them all straight.
#3. I felt that the story line was kind of choppy with all of the various aspects of lose connections with all of the characters.
#4. There wasn't very much about the love between the bride and groom and way too little about the relationship between Piper and her guy 'friend'-which was left very unresolved. It was almost like a cliff hanger, which I hate.
#5. There were WAY to many characters without getting the reader more involved in the lives of the characters for us to embrace or hate them. Most of the characters lives were left hanging losely in the end.
I personally like books that draw you into the characters lives (especially in a series of books) that leave you anxious to get the next book to embrace them again in more of the events in their lives. This book didn't do that. In fact, if that murderer had killed off more, it would not have devastated me as such an event would in other books. I do like HEA books but am able to enjoy many books that don't have one. This is definitely not an HEA.
I won't be getting more books from this author and will not be recommending it to anyone.

Don't bother

I really wanted to like this book. But, I found it lacking in almost every area. The character and story line were good but not developed enough. The characters were flat and uninteresting. The chapters were 2-3 pages long. I think the short chapters were an attempt to create suspense, but it made the book seem disjointed and disorganized. It was not a good reading experience. I gave it two stars because I liked the idea of the story. It had so much potential.
