There are bitter scenes in the Brand family when Martin Brand dies and leaves his large estate not to his widowed sister-in-law but to Marion, his young niece whom he had only met once in his life. For Marion, the prospect of sharing her new home with Martin’s predatory relations is not a happy one, and when a battered body wearing her coat is found on the beach her unhappiness turns to panic. Will Miss Silver find the murderer before the next killing?

I've listened to every Miss Silver mystery that I can find. I always enjoy them.
Patricia Wentworth has been compared to Agatha Christie with her Miss Marple creation. I think Ms Wentworth far exceeds Ms Christie in the well rounded mystery novel! I believe Ms Wentworth's character development is much better. The characters are well-rounded, likable (or not) with identifiable flaws, hidden integrity, hesitations, etc. Every one of the Miss Silver mysteries displays a different type of heroine. Some are likable, some not. Some are shy, while others boisterous. Some are responsible, some are flighty. Some die, some do not. It appears, that with this series, Ms Wentworth has made a great study in the infinite varieties of the human personalities.
I can always trust the Miss Silver mysteries to also respect my "prudish" nature. I wouldn't mind my 12 year-old daughter reading them - there are not graphic scenes! But they are definitely adult novels.
This particular novel displays the troubles thrust upon a very loving, but responsible young lady by an admiring uncle. She handles the situations with kindness and respect. There are also displays of the baser emotions: jealousy, greed and envy.
I guessed the culprit in this novel (don't always!), but only toward the end. But I'm always amazed by the way Miss Silver arrives at her conclusions.
I would recommend all the books in this series.
This story was quite interesting but a bit repetitive. The narrator was very good at giving the characters their own voice.
